Make “Chief” Your New Year Pet Companion (View Video Here)

January 5, 2024

If you’re longing for a good pet companion to start the new year, come see “Chief” at the DeKalb Animal Shelter.

This beautiful two-and-a-half-year-old Akita mix is the WJLE/DeKalb Animal Shelter featured “Pet of the Week.”

“Chief has been here for quite a while”, said Nicole Charles. “He is a loving dog with medium energy. Chief loves to go out in our yard and have a good run and he will lay out as long as we have him out there. When he comes into the office, Chief can relax in here with us. He enjoys being around the people he knows. He has been tested with some dogs so if you have another dog, please schedule an appointment and bring him in so we can test Chief with your dog. Chief has not yet been tested with cats. He is already neutered, and he will come fully vaccinated when you adopt him. Chief’s adoption fee is only $80 so schedule an appointment to come and meet him before he’s gone,” said Charles.

“If you are interested in adopting Chief, please check out the adoptable pet’s link on our website to fill out an application at https://www.dekalbanimalsheltertn.com/ and we will call you to come in and meet him,” said Charles.

The shelter is open Monday-Friday from 8 to 4 and Saturday from 8 to 12 at 186 Transfer Station Road. Phone 615-597-3647.

Smithville Mayor and Aldermen to Meet Monday Night, January 8

The Smithville Mayor and Aldermen will meet in regular monthly session Monday night, January 8 at 6 p.m. at city hall.

The only item on the agenda is a public hearing followed by 2nd and final reading action on an ordinance (520) to amend the city’s 2023-24 budget to fund two major projects.

The City of Smithville last month took the first step toward upgrading its radio communication technology for emergency services.

During a special called meeting Monday night, December 18 the aldermen voted unanimously to adopt a budget amendment ordinance on first reading in the amount of $115,000 to purchase a total of 25 Harris XL 400 Extreme fire rated portable radios for the Smithville Fire Department. The new digital radios are meant to keep firefighters safer with reliable communication while inside a burning building battling a fire.

The Smithville Municipal Swimming Pool is also in need of a major overhaul before it opens in May and the city has committed up to $100,000 for the repairs and rehabilitation.

During Monday night’s regular monthly meeting, December 4 the Mayor and Aldermen heard from Tiera Nash of A Cut Above Outdoors, LLC in Cookeville who submitted a bid of $95,700 to do the work for the city after examining the pool.

The aldermen unanimously voted to make all the repairs suggested by Nash in her bid proposal totaling $95,700 and to pay for it through a budget amendment.
