DeKalb Neighbors Helping Neighbors Blood Drive

A DeKalb County Neighbors Helping Neighbors Blood Assurance Drive will be Monday, May 20 from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. in the parking lot of the County Complex-Smithville Senior Center at 718 South Congress Boulevard on the mobile Bloodmobile. All donors will receive a “Memorial Day T-shirt while supplies last. To schedule an appointment, go to bloodassurance.org/neighbors or contact Jimmy Poss at 615-464-7426 or jimposs72@yahoo.com. Please remember to eat a good meal, drink additional water, avoid energy drinks, and bring a photo ID. Blood Assurance is the SOLE blood provider for our local hospitals. Congressman John Rose Announces May Local Office Hour

U.S. Representative John Rose’s (TN-6) district staff member Lou Nave will be in Smithville for a local office hour this month for constituents to connect directly with caseworkers and receive assistance with federal agencies.

During the local office hour, on Tuesday, May 21 from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Ernest Ray Education Center at 110 South Public Square Smithville, Nave will be available to answer questions and assist you with federal casework, such as social security and veterans’ benefits, steps for obtaining a passport, and more. The local office hour visit occurs monthly. If you have questions, please contact one of Representative Rose’s offices so a staff member may help you.

“We are ready to assist constituents with federal casework and welcome anyone with questions to sit down with staff,” said Representative Rose. “My goal is to make the expertise of my staff and the resources of this office easily accessible to every person I represent.”

Learn Proper Methods to Clean Gravestones
On Thursday May 9, 2024 at 6:00 p.m. the Savage-Goodner Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans is providing a free class in safe methods to clean gravestones and memorials. The event will be in the Smithville Town Cemetery on North Congress Blvd. Some methods commonly used to clean memorial stones can inflict permanent damage to the monuments. Come to the one hour class and learn the proper methods and supplies to preserve these important markers. Those teaching the class have been certified by the Sons of Confederate Veterans in the cleaning methods used by our National Cemeteries. The general public is invited to attend.

Smithville Mayor and Aldermen to Meet

The Smithville Mayor and Aldermen will meet in regular monthly session Monday, May 6 at 6 p.m. at city hall.

The agenda is as follows:

First Reading of Ordinance No. 524 rezoning a parcel on Juniper/ Bell Street from R-1 (Low Density) to R-2 (High Density) as requested by owner/developer Matt Stanley.

Second/ Final Reading of Ordinance No. 522 adopting the current “Rules of the Road” per Tennessee Codes.

Board's approval of Resolution 2024- Enrolling the City into the Tennessee Consolidated Retirement System (TCRS).

First Reading of Ordinance No. 525 amending and adopting the City's budget for the 2024-2025 fiscal year.

Board's approval to donate certain property to Dekalb School system located at entrance of Smithville Elemantary School.

Annual Decoration at Banks Cemetery in DeKalb County

The annual decoration at Banks Cemetery in DeKalb County will be held May 31st, June 1st and June 2nd 2024. Please plan to attend. Your support is needed to keep the cemetery properly maintained and kept looking nice. Someone will be onsite during decoration days to accept donations or they may be mailed to:

American Legion #122 Memorial Day Event

An American Legion #122 Memorial Day Event will be May 25 at the DeKalb County Complex Auditorium starting at 9 a.m. with patriotic music by Susan Hinton. The program will also include the presentation of colors followed by the pledge of allegiance and then the Star-Spangled Banner and prayer at 9:45 a.m.. Judy Redmon of the American Legion Auxiliary #122 will introduce the speaker Ralph Vaughn at 10:00a.m. Following the program a laying of the wreath observance will be held at the courthouse veterans monument led by Commander Jerry Hinton, Adjutant Ronnie Redmon, and veterans.

Malone's Chapel Baptist Church Homecoming and Revival

Malone's Chapel Baptist Church, Walker Creek Road near Alexandria, invites you to join them for their Homecoming Sunday May 5th with Sunday School starting @ 10 a.m. then Worship Service @11 a.m. with Brother Seth Presley. 44th Annual Older Americans Day Celebration

The month of May is recognized nationally as Older Americans Month, a time when we acknowledge the vast contributions older adults make to their families, communities and the
nation.

Justin Potter Library is partnering with the Alexandria and Smithville Senior Centers in hosting the Older Americans Day Celebration. The event will be held in the theatre area of the Mike Foster Multi-Purpose Center located at 712 S Congress Boulevard on Wednesday, May 15th.

The vendor displays will be located in the gym area from 9:00 AM until 10:30 AM with drawings for door prizes and entertainment to follow.

This year’s theme is “Powered by Connection”. The featured entertainment will be the classic rock band “61 Seconds”. We want to thank the local businesses and organizations for providing the door prizes, items for the goody bags and sack lunches for the older Americans to enjoy.

DCHS Class of 1979 Reunion

The DCHS Class of 1979 will have its 45th year reunion on Saturday, May 25 starting at 4 p.m. with dinner at 6 p.m. and a LIVE band at the Short Mountain Distillery. Classmates plus one are invited. The 2024 Vacation Bible School "Stellar" will be held at the Smithville First Free Will Baptist Church at 500 Bright Hill Road May 26-30. A fun filled week of learning, food, and fun. Everyone is invited.

DeKalb Schools Art Exhibit May 18

The DeKalb County Schools Art Exhibit will be Saturday, May 18 featuring works of local art students. The annual event, sponsored by the Smithville Study Club, will be held from 1-3 p.m. at the DeKalb County Complex at 712 South Congress Boulevard. The public is invited to attend.

“The Art Exhibit features art from any student from five years of age and older in our county including home schooled students. Two students will be chosen to receive the “People’s Choice” and “Best of Show” awards,” said Art Chair Susan Hinton.

DCHS Senior Awards Night May 7

Scholarships and other awards will be presented to members of the Class of 2024 at DeKalb County High School during the annual Senior Awards program Tuesday night, May 7 at 6:00 p.m. in the DCHS gymnasium.

Representatives of colleges, universities, branches of the armed services, businesses, civic groups, and other organizations will make the presentations.
Meanwhile, graduation for the DCHS Class of 2024 will be Friday, May 10 at 7:00 p.m. on the high school football field.

DeKalb County School Calendar for 2024

The DCHS graduation is set for Friday, May 10. The last day of school will be May 21, 2024. May 20 will be an abbreviated day. Report cards will be issued at all schools on May 21.
