Chamber Prayer Breakfast

The annual Chamber Prayer Breakfast will be held on Tuesday, November 25th at 7 AM at the DeKalb County Complex Community Theatre, 712 South Congress Drive, Smithville.

Katherine Pack will be the keynote speaker. Katherine is a lifelong resident of DeKalb County. She has served as Circuit Court Clerk for the past 12 years. She is a very active member of Elizabeth Chapel Baptist Church where she teaches an adult Sunday School class, plays the piano, helps with VBS, and sings in The Living Christmas Tree production. Katherine is very community-minded including involvement with the Smithville Senior Citizens, DeKalb Habitat for Humanity, Relay for Life, Foster Care Review Board, Drug Court Community Board, Rotary Club, and DeKalb County Volunteer Fire Department Citizens Academy. Katherine has 3 wonderful children - daughter Tish and husband Chris Summers, son Todd and wife Melissa Pack, and daughter Kate Pack. She has 2 grandsons Brayden Summers and Ty Morris. Katherine loves DeKalb County and is honored to be speaking at the Chamber Prayer Breakfast.

Special music will be performed by Josh Issac and by keyboardist Tomomi McDowell. Suzanne Slager will perform the National Anthem while local Boy Scout Troop #347 presents the flags. Prayers for our community, our leaders, and our children will make this a meaningful and memorable experience.

A delicious breakfast will be catered by Jason Evans, head chef at The Inn at Evins Mill. Leadership Director Jen Sherwood and the Leadership DeKalb Class of 2015 will serve the beverages. Doors open at 6:30 AM.

Tickets are $12 per person and can be purchased at the Chamber office, from the Chamber Board of Directors, or by calling the Chamber office. We’ll be glad to hold your tickets at the door.

Chamber Executive Director, Suzanne Williams says, “I would like to invite everyone to join us at this special event in giving thanks to God for the abundant blessings He has given us in our county. Smithville Police Department Hosting 3rd Annual Cops for Kids Christmas Party

The Smithville Police Department would like to announce that they will be hosting their 3rd Annual Cops for Kids Christmas Party.

The event is held to provide relief around the Holidays for any family that may be going through a difficult time due to illness, loss of income or other circumstances. The goal of the event is to help lessen the stress on families and provide them with a fun evening of food, fellowship, gifts for their children and, of course, a visit from Santa. This event is by invitation only and anyone wishing to attend must fill out an application. Applications may be picked up at the Smithville Police Department or can be printed online at www.wjle.com.

Applications must be turned in no later than Monday, December 1, 2014. They may be returned to the Smithville Police Department or mailed to SPD, Attn: Cops for Kids, 104 East Main Street, Smithville, TN 37166.

Anyone who would like to donate gifts may do so by bringing a new, unwrapped gift to the Smithville Police Department, Cash Express at 126 East Bryant Street in Smithville or the Dollar General Stores in Smithville and Dowelltown or you may give your donation directly to a City police officer. Deadline for donations is December 5, 2014.

Smithville Christmas Parade

The Smithville Christmas Parade will be Saturday, December 6th starting at 1:00 p.m. at Smithville Elementary. To enter call or leave a message with Jeff Wright at 597-6750 or John Poss 597-1135. Antique cars and Horse riders do not have to pre-register. All others need to call by December 4th to make sure you are included in the lineup.

"Healing Families" Family/Friend Support Group

DeKalb County Drug Court and Haven of Hope of DeKalb County are offering a free and open to the public family/friend support group, "Healing Families", for those concerned about someone struggling with the disease of addiction. The group meets at the Haven of Hope office, 612S Congress Blvd, from 5:30 to 6:30 Thursday evenings. Childcare is provided. Call 597-4673 for more information.

UT Extension Christmas Canning Classes Offered

The UT Extension office will be offering Christmas Canning Gift classes in December. Cost per class is $30 and covers all materials and supplies. The instructor for the classes will be UT Extension Agent Dr. April Martin. Classes to learn canning basics and how to use a water bath canner. Participants will take home jars of cranberry chutney and pickled bread n butter zucchini. These make nice Christmas gifts. Classes will be held on:

Monday, December 1, 8 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Thursday, December 4, 8 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Thursday, December 4, 5:30 – 9:00 p.m.

A minimum of 4 participants per class is required and payment must be received within 3 business days of the class.

BETH-LEHEM BIRTHDAY BASH

BETH-LEHEM BIRTHDAY BASH a ‘50’s style Musical Comedy Dinner Theatre will be presented at the County Complex in Smithville on Friday December 12th at 6:30, Saturday December 13th with two performances - A matinee at 12:30 and an evening show at 6:30 PM.

Dinner and show is $15.00. Show only $10.00. Dinner tickets must be purchased in advance. Call Josh Isaac at (615) 318-2298 for tickets. They may be also be purchased at the Chamber of Commerce office in the Courthouse.

This play is written and directed by Josh Isaac, and will be the kickoff presentation for a new season of community plays to be featured at the center this coming year and beyond. This play is performed by the First Assembly of God Drama Troupe, who are well known in the community for providing first rate entertainment in recent years. Proceeds of this event will help with expenses at the upcoming Fine Art competition for the teens of First Assembly.

Haven of Hope Grief Support Group Meeting

Justin Potter Library Supports Tennessee Promise Initiative

In support of the Tennessee Promise initiative, Justin Potter Library will commit to the following actions:

2. Dec. 4 through Jan 15, those computers and space can be used Thursdays from 3:00 - 5:00 p.m. to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the students' college applications.

3. Starting Jan 22 through Feb 26, TNPromise scholars can complete their eight hours of community service as volunteers at Justin Potter Library on Thursdays between the hours of 3:00 - 5:00 pm.
