The Greenbrier Bobcats raced out to a 14-0 first quarter lead, and used that early advantage to hold off the feisty DeKalb County Tigers, 36-22, Friday night in Greenbrier.
The Bobcats won the game, despite the Tigers holding a 294-280 edge in total offensive yards.
After DeKalb County went three-and-out on their first possession, Greenbrier scored on their second play from scrimmage. Quarterback Justin Grogan found Ryan Dickerson on a screen pass, and Dickerson scampered 18 yards for the score. Blake Tucker added the extra point, and the Bobcats jumped on top, 7-0, with 9:50 left in the opening quarter.
The Tigers drove into Bobcat territory on their nexrt possession, but a Matthew Lawrence fumble gave Greenbrier the ball at their own 20 yard line. Nine plays later, Zack Ziegler took off on a 42-yard touchdown run, which made it a 14-0 game after Tucker's PAT.
DeKalb County scored on the ensuing drive, as Hunter Poteete hooked up with J.J. Herriott on a51-yard touchdown pass, which cut the Bobcat lead in half, after Juan Ruiz added the extra point.
Greenbrier re-claimed a two touchdown lead with 10:49 on the clock in the second quarter, as Michael Seay rambled 35 yards for the third Bobcat score. Tucker added his third extra point, and the margin went to 21-7.
The Tigers tacked on a field goal before the intermission, as Ruiz capped off a 15-play, 63 yard drive with a 24-yard field goal. Greenbrier went to the locker room with a 21-10 lead, as neither team put up any more points in the remainder of the half.
The Bobcats were stopped by the Tiger defense on the first drive of the second half, but after a DeKalb three-and-out, Greenbrier put together a four-play, 51-yard drive, capped off by Ziegler's 18-yard touchdown run. Tucker's kick sailed wide left, but Greenbrier upped their advantage to
three scores, at 27-10.
Neither team scored again until the 4:18 mark of the fourth quarter, when Poteete hit Lawrence on a four-yard touchdown pass to pull the Tigers to within 11, at 27-16, after Ruiz missed the PAT.
Greenbrier came back on their next drive and scored on a 58-yard run by Seay, and all but sealed the victory, with 3:20 left in the fourth quarter. DeKalb County had one more score left in them, however, as Lawrence blew up the middle on a 20-yard scoring run. Ruiz had his extra point attempt blocked, and the score was 36-22, with 1:01 left in the game. The Tigers attempted an on-side kick, but the ball hit a Bobcat player and rolled out of bounds, giving Greenbrier the ball and the opportunity to run out the clock.
The Tigers ran for 89 yards on 27 carries, led by Matthew Lawrence, with 12 carries for 79 yards and a touchdown. Through the air, Hunter Poteete was 14-of-30 for 207 yards with two touchdowns. Collin Patterson caught seven passes for 102 yards. J.J. Herriott caught two passes for 69 yards with one touchdown.
Greenbrier ended the night with 235 rushing yards on 33 carries, while quarterback, Justin Grogan, completed three-of-12 passes for 52 yards.
DeKalb County drops to 0-3 on the season, and open Region play 0-1. The Tigers have a bye next week, and will be back in action on Friday, September 21st, at Station Camp.
