The DeKalb County High School Tiger and Lady Tiger basketball teams swept both games Friday night beating Van Buren County at Spencer in their first games of the regular season.
The Lady Tigers knocked off the Lady Eagles 66 to 62 while the Tigers won in overtime 72 to 65
The games were played as part of the Hall of Fame Classic, which are games that can either count as regular season or pre-season games. Coaches have the option whether or not to count the contests on their win-loss record.
In the girls game, DC led 10 to 8 after the first period but were outscored 17 to 13 in the second period and trailed 25 to 23 at halftime. The Lady Tigers outgunned Van Buren County 29 to 18 in the third period and led 52 to 43 going into the fourth period. In the final quarter, DC was outscored 19 to 14 but held on for a 66 to 62 win.
Chelsea Lewis led the Lady Tigers in scoring with 16 points. Alex Meadows had 14. Danielle Tyson 12. Loren Cripps 10. Abbey Caldwell 6. Raye Baker 4 and Ashley Barnes had 2 points.
In the boys game, the Eagles led 16 to 12 after the first period and outscored the Tigers 15 to 11 in the second period to take a 31 to 23 lead at halftime. DC evened the score at 44 to 44 by the end of the third period, outscoring Van Buren County 21 to 13. The teams played to a 63 to 63 tie by the end of regulation with each team scoring 19 points in the fourth period to send the game to overtime. The Tigers won the game in OT 72 to 65 outscoring the Eagles 9 to 2
Stephen Howell and Sonni Young each scored 18 to lead the Tigers in scoring. Braxton Atnip had 12 points. Eli Lomas 9. Andrew Atnip 8. Braxton Howell 4 and Ethan Roller with 3 points.
In the Hall of Fame Play Day today (Saturday) in Smithville, the DeKalb County Lady Tigers will host Gabriel Christian at 10:00 a.m. followed at 11:30 a.m. by a girls game between Bledsoe County and Lead Academy of the Chattanooga area.
The Tigers will host Gabriel Christian Saturday at 1:00 p.m. followed at 2:30 p.m. by a girls game (the loser of game #1 plays winner game #2)
The Bledsoe County boys will take on Gabriel Christian at 4:00 p.m. followed at 5:30 p.m. by a girls game (winner of game #1 plays the loser of game #2)
The Tigers will then play Bledsoe County at 7:00 p.m.
