July 21, 2008

The DeKalb County 11 & 12 year old Little League All-Stars staved off elimination at the State Tournament in Pulaski on Sunday, as they beat Donelson, 14-11, in an afternoon slugfest.

DeKalb never trailed in the game, as they scored the game's first run in the top of the first inning on a solo home run by Steven Page, and added five more runs in the second on a two-run homer by Braxton Howell, a three-run shot by Jalon Foster, and an RBI single by Devin Summers. Before Donelson put their first run on the board, DeKalb County already had a 7-0 lead.

Donelson posted two runs in the bottom of the second inning, then scored two more in the bottom of the fourth to trim DeKalb's lead to 7-4. The local Little Leaguers, however, erupted for five runs in the top of the fifth inning to build an 12-4 lead. Howell and Foster each hit their second home runs of the game; Howell's was a solo shot with one out in the fifth, while Foster's was a bases-clearing grand slam, which gave DeKalb the seven-run margin.

Donelson came back with seven runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth, which trimmed the DC lead to 12-11, but DeKalb added two more runs in the top of the fifth on a solo home run by Evan Cripps and Aaron Patterson raced home on a fielder's choice by Foster. Donelson put two runners on in the bottom of the sixth, but DeKalb shut the door with no more damage allowed.

Foster started the game on the mound, and worked 4 1/3 innings. He allowed eight runs on eight hits, struck out four, walked two and hit a batter. Howell came in for one-third of an inning of relief, and surrendered three runs on one hit. Howell walked two and hit a batter. Cody Harrell finished up the final inning and a third, and picked up the save. Harrell allowed one hit, struck out two and walked one.

DeKalb County finished with 14 hits, including six home runs. Foster and Harrell each hit two, while Cripps and Page each added one. Page also had three singles to complete a 4-for-4 game. Devin Summers had two singles, while Cripps, Patterson, and Seth Gerringer each added one single.

DeKalb County is scheduled to play St. Bethlehem in another elimination game, Monday at 6:00 p.m. in Pulaski.

Meanwhile, the DeKalb County 13 & 14 year old Junior League All-Stars had their run at the State Tournament ended Monday in South Holeston, TN, as they lost to Eagleton, 8-3, on Sunday. DeKalb lost their tournament opener to Donelson, 16-1, on Saturday.
