The DeKalb Middle School Saints lost to Boyd Christian, 27-24, Saturday night at Warren County High School, which ended their four-year hold on the Warren Lodge Holiday Tournament Championship.
The Saints trailed 8-7 at the end of the first period and 16-9 at the half, after scoring only two points in the second period. The Broncos led by as many as 11 points in the third, but the Saints pulled to within eight points, at 23-15, by the end of the period.
DMS battled back in the fourth, and cut the Boyd lead to just three points, with 7.5 seconds left on the clock. Free throws in those final seconds cost the Saints a shot at their fifth straight tournament title. DeKalb had four technical foul shots, but missed all four which left the score at 27-24 as time expired. For the game, the Saints shot only 4-of-18 from the free throw line.
Andrew Atnip led the Saints with 13 points, while Cody Puckett added five. Wesley Mason, Alex Cripps and Evan Curtis each had two points. Atnip, Puckett, Mason and Daniel Stanley were all named All-Tournament.
The Saints finished 2-1 in round-robin play at the Warren Lodge Tournament, beating Palmer, 44-15, in the opening game, then topping North Grundy, 42-17 in their second game.
The Lady Saints, meanwhile, scored a third place finish in the tournament after dropping a 32-31 decision to Dibrell in Saturday's finale.
Jessica Garrison scored 14 points to lead the Lady Saints, who fell behind, 7-4, in the opening period, but rallied for a 16-14 lead at the half. The game continued on a back-and forth pace throughout the second half, and DMS missed in a shot in the closing seconds, which would have given them a shot at the win.
Loren Foster added eight points for the Lady Saints, while Mary Roller led Dibrell with 12.
The Lady Saints split their first two games of the tournament, losing to eventual tournament champion, Palmer, 40-28, in their first game, then knocked off North Grundy, 21-17, in their second game. Foster and Brooke Hutchings scored All-Tournament nods for DMS.
