With a first day score of 309, the DeKalb County High School Tiger golf team sits third out of eight teams at the Class A-AA State Tournament in Murfreesboro. After the first 18 holes on Tuesday, the Tigers trailed only the University School of Jackson, who had a first-day score of 296, and David Lipscomb, who finished with a 300.
Individually for DeKalb County, Payne Denman shot a 71 on Tuesday, which tied him for fourth among individual medalists. Goodpasture's Joe David shot an 8-under-par-64 on Tuesday, which gave him a two-stroke lead over Scott Metcalf of the University School of Jackson. Dylan Walters of David Lipscomb was third, with a 69, while both Denman and Matthew Smith of Rutledge were seven strokes off the lead.
Austin Garrett shot a first round score of 75 for the Tigers, while Grant Goodwin tallied a 78. Grant James shot an 85 through the first 18 holes, while Tyler Robinson scored an 88.
Meanwhile, DeKalb County's Shay Sullivan shot an 84 on Tuesday, which tied her for 16th place among individual medalists. Although the Lady Tigers did not qualify as a team for the State Tournament, Sullivan qualified by winning the individual portions of both the District and Region Tournaments.
The second and final round of the Class A-AA State Tournament will tee off a 9:00 a.m. Wednesday morning, at the Old Fort Golf Course in Murfreesboro.
