The DeKalb County High School Tigerette fast-pitch softball team stayed alive in the Class AA State Softball Tournament in Murfreesboro, Wednesday, with a 6-0 shutout victory over Waverly Central. The win moves the Tigerettes into another elimination game on Thursday morning against Unicoi County, who dropped a 3-0 decision to Goodpasture, Wednesday evening.
The Tigerettes took the lead with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. Cynthia Woodward knocked in Shay Sullivan with an RBI single, then scored, herself, on a sacrifice fly by Morgan Page to left field.
The score remained 2-0 until the bottom of the fifth inning, when Kristina Stephens belted a solo home run. DeKalb County tacked on two more runs in the inning on an error by Waverly third baseman, Julia Cruce, who misplayed a Woodward ground ball, allowing it to get into the outfield. Shay Sullivan and Brittney Armour - who had reached on back-to-back base hits with two outs - each came in to score to make it 5-0.
Jaylen Garrett scored an insurance run for the Tigerettes in the bottom of the sixth inning on a Sarah West fly ball to left center field, which was dropped by Waverly's Tiffany Tidwell.
Page earned the win in the pitcher's circle for DeKalb County, as she scattered four hits through seven innings, struck out three, walked three and hit one batter. Ashton Carnahan took the loss for Waverly, as she pitched the first five innings, allowed five runs, two earned, on five hits, struck out five and walked two. Amber McClary pitched the last inning for the Lady Tigers and gave up an unearned run on one hit.
At the plate for the Tigerettes, Sullivan was 2-for-4 with a pair of singles to lead the seven-hit attack. Stephens tallied a home run, Armour rippled a double, while Garrett, Woodward and Bennett each added a single.
The Tigerettes improve to 28-10 on the season, while Waverly finishes the year at 32-14. In Wednesday's other elimination game, Westview edged past Chester County, 4-3, to move on in the loser's bracket. In the other winner's bracket contest, Gibbs - who beat DeKalb County, 9-1, on Tuesday - edged Covington, 1-0, to earn a winner's bracket final showdown against Goodpasture, Thursday evening.
WJLE plans live coverage of Thursday morning's game between DeKalb County and Unicoi County. Should the Tigerettes win, they would play either Covington or Westview, Thursday evening at 5:00 p.m.
