The DeKalb County High School Tiger baseball team shut out Smith County, 8-0, Monday evening in Baxter in the opening round of the double-elimination portion of the District 7-AA Tournament.
Trey Finley pitched seven innings of three-hit ball for the win on the mound. The senior struck out nine, walked three and hit three batters, as the Tigers stranded five Smith County runners in scoring position.
DeKalb County struck with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Bray Page and Zack Rowland had back-to-back RBI base hits, and Rowland scored with two outs in the inning after John Malone reached on a fielding error with bases loaded.
The Tigers tacked on another run in the bottom of the second on Page's second RBI rip of the night. The score remained 4-0, however, until the bottom of the sixth inning, when DeKalb doubled their score with a four-run inning. Page, Destry Wiggins and Joseph Bowen did the damage in the sixth, as each drove in one run. Page concluded the night 4-for-4 at the plate, with two doubles, two singles and three RBI.
DeKalb had nine total hits, while the Owls aided the effort with five fielding errors. Wiggins and Rowland each had a single and an RBI, Bowen had an RBI double, Malone and Colt Stewart each had a single, while Cody Atnip tallied an RBI.
The Tigers improve to 23-5 on the season, while the Owls drop to 16-10. DeKalb County will play either top-seeded Upperman or fourth-seeded Macon County, Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. in the winner's bracket final. Upperman and Macon County played in Monday night's second game.
