The DeKalb County High School basketball teams split a doubleheader at Monterey, Friday night. The Lady Tigers lost the opener, 40-35, while the Tigers won the nightcap, 59-41.
The Lady Tigers led for most of the first three periods, but Monterey gained the lead late in the third, and pulled away late. DeKalb County led 6-4 at the end of the first period, and had a 12-6 lead late in the second. Monterey scored the final six points of the half to tie the game at 12-12 at the intermission.
DeKalb had a 21-16 lead late in the third, but the Lady Wildcats rallied for a 23-21 lead by the end of the period. Monterey out-scored the Lady Tigers, 17-14, in the fourth to pull away for the win.
Cynthia Woodward scored 12 points to lead the Lady Tigers, while Victoria Bennett added seven. Britnee Sells tallied 13 points to lead Monterey.
In the boys’ game, the Tigers led 12-9 at the end of the first period, and 28-20 at the half. DeKalb County pulled ahead 42-30 after the third period, and out-socred Monterey 17-11 in the fourth to roll on to the 59-41 win.
Seth Willoughby had 13 points to lead the Tigers, followed by Payne Denman with 12 and Hunter Poteete with 11 points. Josh Johnson scored 13 points to lead the Wildcats.
The Lady Tigers drop to 5-14 on the season, while the Tigers improve to 12-7. DeKalb County will host Upperman, Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m. WJLE plans live coverage.
