The DeKalb County Tigerette fast-pitch softball team is on the way to the State Tournament.
Sarah West blasted a two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to break a 2-2 tie with Sub-State host, Hixson, and the Tigerettes held on for a 4-2 victory, Friday night in Chattanooga. The win puts the Tigerettes in the State Tournament for the fifth time in the program's history, and for the first time since the 2001 season.
DeKalb County was held without a base runner for the first four innings, as the Lady Wildcats built a 2-0 lead with a run in the third inning and another in the fourth. Hixson pitcher, Dawon Millwood walked DC's Kristina Stephens to lead off the top of the fifth inning, and West followed with a one-out single. Shay Sullivan ripped a double to the outfield, which scored both Stephens and West, and tied the game, 2-2.
After giving up five hits in the first four innings, including RBI singles to Whitney Galloway and Brittany Roberts, Tigerette pitcher, Morgan Page, retired nine of the last ten batters she faced in the final four-plus innings, allowing only a two-out sixth inning walk to Millwood. Page reached base with a one-out single in the top of the seventh, and West followed her with the two-run shot to center field, which proved to be the game winner after the Tigerettes retired the Lady Wildcats in order in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Page allowed the two Hixson runs on five hits, struck out four and walked five, while Millwood gave up DeKalb's four runs on four hits, struck out eight and walked one.
The Tigerettes improve to 27-9 overall on the season, while Hixson finishes their season with a 19-5 record. DeKalb County will play in the TSSAA Class AA State Tournament, which begins Tuesday in Murfreesboro. The Tigerettes will play Gibbs at 5:00 p.m. that day at McKnight Park.
