DeKalb West School Names Students of the Month

DeKalb West School Monday announced the May Students of the Month.
Students selected for the honor are from PreK-Judd Sebolt; Kindergarten: Marley Pyburn, Layla Garza, and Ripley Barnes; 1st grade–Harper Hale, Jordyn Brigham, and Carson Maynard; 2nd grade: Isabella Scott, Braylyn Rice, and Lucas Yancey; 3rd grade: Rebekah Goss and Bentley Wright; 4th grade: Halia McDaniel and Ezzy Moore; 5th grade: Akacia Walker and Ava Melton; 6th grade: Kayley Sims and Landon Ford; 7th grade: Cameron Stanley and Abby Jo Crook; 8th grade: Bradley Pelham and Hailey Redmon.
Students are selected based on character, grades and other factors that make them an exemplary student.
Library Summer Reading Program Begins June 3

The Justin Potter and Alexandria Libraries Summer Reading Program will begin on June 3rd and end on June 24th . All events for both libraries will be in the DeKalb County Complex Theatre Room at 2:00 pm. Children of all ages can begin registering for Summer Reading at both libraries on May 24th.
Each child that registers and meets their goal will receive a participation certificate and other goodies at the end of the Summer Reading Program. This year’s theme is “Tails and Tales”. In order to insure the well-being of the families attending and the library staff masks and social distancing will be required.
Thursday, June 3rd at 2:00 pm – Opening party with Mr. Bond’s Science Guys.
Thursday, June 10th at 2:00 pm – Barry Mitchell’s “Animal Tales, Turtle Shells & a Chicken.
Thursday, June 17th at 2:00 pm – Bob Tartar and his Animalogy Critters.
Thursday, June 24th at 2:00 pm – Final Party with Edgar Evins State Park Rangers and Animal Critters.
“We hope you will join us for a fun filled in-person Summer Reading Program. We are looking forward to seeing everyone,” said Library Director Kathy Hendrixson

City Seeks Applicants to fill Vacancy on Equalization Board

The City of Smithville is looking to fill a vacant seat on the County Board of Equalization from citizens who own property in the city.
The county board meets one week a year beginning June 1 from 8:30am to 4:00pm to hear real property appeals across DeKalb County. No qualifications are required, however, a real estate or construction background would be helpful. Annually, board members are required to watch a four hour training video. The county board members are paid approximately $50 per day.
