June is National Dairy Month

On Friday, June 5th, County Mayor Tim Stribling signed a proclamation to officially designate June as Dairy Month in DeKalb County. Ansley Cantrell, the 4-H June Dairy Month chairperson, witnessed the signing, and the event was celebrated with a milkshake.

The proclamation reads:

WHEREAS dairy farmers have contributed to the development and well-being of DeKalb County since the earliest formation of DeKalb County.

WHEREAS, the dairy industry is a major industry in Tennessee, a significant contribution to the economy.

WHEREAS, milk and dairy foods provide health benefits and valuable nutrients; and

WHEREAS, real milk and dairy foods are superiors to their imitations in quality, values, and taste; and

WHEREAS, the 83rd celebration of June Dairy Month, highlighting the dairy industry, will occur during 2020;

Now, therefore, be it resolved by Tim Stribling, mayor of DeKalb County, that June 2020 is designated to the celebration of June Dairy Month, and I call upon all the government agencies and the people of DeKalb County in order to observe the month with appropriate programs and activities.

DeKalb County 4-H has many activities planned, but due to recent health concerns, they will be mostly virtual. There will be an art contest, virtual tours, trivia, recipes, and more, as well as a dairy food drive. A man on a motorcycle was airlifted Saturday after plunging down an embankment off Dale Ridge Road in the Cove Hollow area.

Trooper Bobby Johnson of the Tennessee Highway Patrol said 67 year old Edward Presnar of Gallatin was on a 2005 Harley Davidson motorcycle traveling north on Dale Ridge Road when he failed to negotiate a curve and went off the highway hitting several trees as he plunged about 30 feet down a steep wooded hillside.

Fire and rescue volunteers brought Presnar back up to the highway where he was loaded onto an ambulance and transported to a helicopter landing zone and then airlifted to Vanderbilt Hospital.

Free Food for the Community!

An effort is underway to make sure families have plenty to eat this summer.

Local churches, TVA, Caney Fork Electric Cooperative, and Second Harvest have joined forces to sponsor a weekly food drive.

Similar to the food distribution during the spring, this is a drive through and is being held on Tuesdays from 10:30 a.m. until 12 noon at DeKalb Middle School.

Chad Ramsey, Pastor of the Smithville First Baptist Church, invites everyone with a need to take advantage of it.

“We have been able to get a lot of support from the local churches who have come together financially and with volunteers to help pass out food and right now we have a lot of non-perishable food to pass out. TVA has really stepped in through Caney Fork Electric Cooperative with a grant to help support us in keeping this food ministry going through the summer. Second Harvest has also started a program that we are now part of to provide food for families and children through the summer. Both TVA and Second Harvest have really come together to allow us to continue to pass out food and to help people in our community and we have churches who are in the midst of it all. It started in the spring with kids and we are still ministering to them but we now want to minister to our entire community so be sure to drive in this summer on Tuesdays from 10:30 a.m. until 12 noon at DeKalb Middle School to get a bag of food because we have plenty to give out,” said Ramsey.
