Four people including two minor children escaped injury in a two-vehicle crash Monday afternoon in Smithville.
Trooper Bobby Johnson of the Tennessee Highway Patrol said that 30-year-old Louis Richards of Smithville was driving a 2023 Ford F150 attempting to cross Dry Creek Road from Villa Street when he pulled into the path of a 1999 Chevy Silverado, driven by 59-year-old Barry Deaver of Smithville who was west on Dry Creek Road. Two minor children were with Richards. The impact of the crash forced the Silverado into the creek near Whaley Street where it came to rest on the passenger side. No one was injured.
Members of the Smithville Police and Fire Department responded along with DeKalb EMS.
DCHS Awarded Grant for CNA Training

DCHS received a grant recently from The Foundation for Geriatric Education (TFGE) to support students enrolled in the Certified Nursing Aide course at NHC Smithville during the spring semester.
The $1,850 gift paid for textbooks and equipment used during the class, which is taught by NHC Smithville’s CNA Instructor Nanci Drennan.
“We partnered with Health Science teacher Angie Johnson to develop a cohort of students that come to NHC during the school day and complete their coursework,” Drennan said. “Once the students complete the course and become certified, they’ll be eligible to transition to work-based learning and work as regular CNAs.”
Partnerships between DCHS and NHC have existed in the past, but this semester’s CNA course revived the industry-based training that students receive at the health care center.
“We are grateful for Principal Bruce Curtis and CTE Director Brad Leach’s coordinating this opportunity with us,” said Ryan Vaden, Administrator at NHC. “We’re also excited to see these TFGE funds used in this way.”
TFGE was created by NHC’s founder Dr. Carl Adams to support health care education, especially in geriatrics. Recipients of grants can be students that work at NHC or community-based education programs.
