School Bus Drivers Needed

The DeKalb County School System is in search of experienced bus drivers.

Persons interested may contact Transportation Supervisor Jimmy Sprague. “It takes a special kind of person to drive a school bus. You have to love kids. It’s perfect for a stay at home mom who wants to be on the same schedule as her kids; for a person with their own business or someone who has a part time job or does seasonal work,” he said.

“We have 42 drivers in the county. I am currently one driver short but I am using my sub-pool to fill the position,” he said.

“To be a school bus driver you must be at least 25 years old and have a CDL license, Class A or Class B. You must have a Passenger and School Bus Endorsement, carry a current medical card, have a clean DMV record, and you must be able to pass a background check and drug screening. After a bus driver is hired, there are random drug tests at the bus garage for all drivers. If you are interested in driving a school bus call or come see me. You may fill out an application on line or I have hard copies and we can fill them out at the office,” said Sprague.

DeKalb County voters favored all the Republican candidates in Tuesday’s Tennessee General Election.

Every GOP candidate swept all 15 precincts and had a majority of the early voting and absentee votes.

Bill Lee was elected Governor beating Democratic challenger and former Nashville Mayor Karl Dean 1,333,811 to 862,324. In DeKalb County Lee  outpolled Dean 4,170 to 1,735. Lee will succeed two term Republican Governor Bill Haslam.

Marsha Blackburn defeated former Democratic Governor and Nashville Mayor Phil Bredesen to succeed Bob Corker in the United States Senate.  Statewide, Blackburn won 1,225,352 to 982,638. In DeKalb County, Blackburn won 3,900 to 1,982.

John Rose has been elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from the 6th District to succeed Congressman Diane Black. Rose beat Democratic nominee Dr. Dawn Barlow  for the seat 172,684 to 70,298 district-wide. In DeKalb County Rose won 3,691 to 1,362

17th District State Senator Mark Pody was elected to a full four year term beating Democrat Mary Alice Carfi district wide 53,290 to 22,418. Pody carried all six counties in the district. In DeKalb County Pody won 3,733 to 1,568

Clark Boyd was elected to a full two year term in the State House of Representatives from the 46^th District defeating Democratic challenger Mark Cagle district wide 17,582 to 6,530. Boyd carried all three counties in the district and won DeKalb County 958 to 445.

State Representative Terri Lynn Weaver in the 40^th district was unopposed and received 3,372 complimentary votes in DeKalb County. District-wide Weaver received 20,567 complimentary votes.

A total of 6,030 people voted in Tuesday’s election including 3,135 early voters and absentees and 2,895  on election day

The Tennessee Highway Safety Office (THSO) has announced $22 million in federal grant funds to be distributed statewide from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for the 2018-2019 Federal Fiscal Year.

Over 350 federal grants exceeding $19 million have been awarded to law enforcement agencies and highway safety partners across Tennessee including the Smithville and Alexandria Police Departments. Approximately $3 million in media grant funds will be allocated for highway safety education and public awareness campaigns.

The $10,000 grant for the Smithville Police Department is for Alcohol and Impaired Driving Enforcement while the Alexandria Police Department will get a $5,000 grant for High Visibility Enforcement.

“Every year, traffic safety advocates, non-profit organizations, emergency response personnel, law enforcement, District Attorneys’ offices, and other state agencies across Tennessee seek funding through grant applications offered by the THSO,” said THSO Director Vic Donoho. “Applicants who meet the required data-driven criteria and highway safety standards are awarded grant funds to support the THSO’s mission to reduce traffic crashes, injuries and fatalities.”
