Tigers Make Quick Exit from District Tournament

The DCHS Tigers made a quick exit from the District 8AA basketball tournament Tuesday night with a 57 to 42 loss to the Watertown Purple Tigers.
The tourney is being played at Hooper Eblen Center on the campus of Tennessee Tech University.
DeKalb County was the higher seed in the tournament and had beaten the Purple Tigers twice this season, 73 to 66 at Watertown on December 1 and 67 to 57 in Smithville on January 19. DeKalb County was seeded 6th and Watertown 7th in the tournament.
Watertown will advance to play the 3rd seeded Macon County Tigers Thursday night at 7:30 p.m.
In the game Tuesday night, Watertown led 18 to 11 after the 1st period, 29 to 15 at halftime, and 39 to 25 after the 3rd period before winning 57 to 42.
The Tigers conclude their season at 13-14 overall and 6-8 in the regular season district race.
In the other game Tuesday night, the Livingston Academy Lady Wildcats, the 6th seed, eliminated Smith County, the 7th seed, from the tournament winning 55 to 24. Livingston Academy advances to play York Institute, the 3rd seed, Thursday night, February 15 at 6 p.m.
The DeKalb County Lady Tigers, the 5th seed, will play their first game in the tournament tonight (Wednesday, February 14) against Watertown, the 8th seed, at 6:00 p.m. The winner will meet Cannon County, the 4th seed, on Friday night, February 16 at 6 p.m.
WJLE will have LIVE coverage.
Meanwhile the Smith County Owls, the 5th seed, will take on the Cannon County Lions, the 8th seed, in the tournament tonight, Wednesday February 14 at 7:30 p.m.
Carson-Newman Coach to Speak at DCHS Baseball Chili Supper

Tom Griffin, the head baseball coach at Carson-Newman College, will be the guest speaker at the annual DCHS baseball chili supper, LIVE auction, and silent auction on Monday, March 5.
The fundraising chili supper will be held at the DeKalb County Complex starting at 6 p.m.
Griffin is entering his 13th season this year as head baseball coach at Carson-Newman.
He has compiled an overall record of 347-250 and a conference record of 154-139 at Carson Newman. He is 531-449-2 in 20 seasons as a college baseball coach.
Griffin has also authored an instructional catching baseball video, “Catch It, Block It, Throw It.” A regular instructional speaker at various coaching clinics and camps, he has been the featured speaker at the American Baseball Coaches Association convention in Orlando, Florida in 2007, Anaheim, California in 2012, and Nashville, TN in 2015.
To get tickets find a DCHS baseball player or purchase tickets at the door. The cost is $8.00 for one person or $25 for a family.

DeKalb Prevention Coalition Earns Recognition

The DeKalb Prevention Coalition earned a diploma last week after successfully completing the requirements for graduation from the National Coalition Institute.
The ceremony was held during the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America’s (CADCA) 28th Annual National Leadership Forum on February 5-8 in Washington, D.C.
DPC Treasurer, Kristi Paling & DPC Coordinator, Lisa Cripps accepted the CADCA diploma from the National Coalition Institute.
The mission of CADCA is to strengthen the capacity of community coalitions to create and maintain safe, healthy and drug-free communities globally. This is accomplished by providing technical assistance and training, public policy advocacy, media strategies and marketing programs, training and special events. #CADCA #Community #Graduates
The DeKalb County coalition’s goal is to unite community leaders and citizens of DeKalb County forming strong partnerships across major community sectors with the goal of reducing substance abuse.
The vision of the coalition is to see DeKalb County citizens live in a safe, healthy, and drug free community.
This project is funded by The Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services.
