City Schedules Public Hearing on Annexation Plan (View Video of Meeting Here)

The City of Smithville is a step closer to annexing property for a future residential development into the corporate limits.

During Monday night’s regular monthly meeting, the aldermen adopted a resolution setting a public hearing for October 4th at 6 p.m. at city hall on the proposed annexation and plan of services for the site on Parkway Drive near the airport adjacent to the Airport Park property.

Mayor Josh Miller said a local developer wants to build a residential subdivision there.

If approved the annexation would come with conditions.

“This is the property that joins the Airport Park and is a potential development of about 40 homes by Larry Hasty. It does come with some conditions: As long as the county turns over portions of Allen Street, Shady Drive, Second Street, and Parkway Drive; Also our planning commission recommended that our engineer either design or inspect the infrastructure once it is put in; The next condition is that it has to be on gravity flow and not for a sewer pump system because if that were to happen every house on the site would need to have a pump and over time that would have to be turned over to the city and we do not need to get into the expense of pumps. The last condition is that the property be zoned R-2 residential,” said Mayor Miller.

City Administrator Hunter Hendrixson said the proposed annexation and plan of services have been reviewed and recommended by the city planning commission and property owners in the area will be notified.

The DeKalb County Regional Planning Commission will schedule a public hearing in October and then decide whether to recommend to the county commission removing the roads (Allen Street, Shady Drive, Second Street, and Parkway Drive) from the county road list and turning them over to the city. If approved no existing county landowners would be affected by the proposed annexation only the site to be developed by Mr. Hasty and the four roads mentioned above.

A late night high speed pursuit resulted in a crash and the arrest of two people.

18 year old Kenneth Mooneyham of Smithville is charged with evading arrest, reckless endangerment, driving on a suspended license, and speeding. 31 year old Heather McClure of Hendersonville is facing active warrants against her out of Davidson County.

According to Trooper Bobby Johnson of the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the pursuit began after he clocked a 1997 Ford Mustang speeding on Highway 70.

“ At 11:11 p.m. Monday night, September 13 while running stationary radar on Highway 70 I clocked a vehicle westbound traveling 84 MPH in a 55 MPH zone. Upon my initiating lights and sirens the vehicle continued westbound at a high rate of speed. The vehicle turned onto Woodbury Highway in a reckless manner striking the curb, causing the driver to lose control. The car then struck both the east and west side guard rails. The vehicle was badly damaged and smoking profusely as it continued south on Woodbury Highway. About a mile before the Cannon County line the driver ran off the left side of the roadway and overturned coming to final rest on its top. Both the driver, Mooneyham, and passenger McClure were uninjured and taken into custody.

Trooper Johnson was assisted by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department.
