Pilot Escapes Serious Injury in Plane Crash (VIEW VIDEO HERE)

A local pilot escaped serious injury in a plane crash Wednesday afternoon. According to Smithville Airport Manager Joe Johnson, the pilot Jeff Parker took off from the runway in a Piper Comanche and was about 200 feet off the ground when his engine stalled. The plane came down in a field beside Cordell Love Road near the airport. Parker was taken by DeKalb EMS to Saint Thomas DeKalb Hospital.

A plane crash last October near the Smithville Municipal Airport has served as a reminder to city officials about the potential dangers and the concerns for public safety. FAA rules require the City to close the playground and ballpark near the airport.

911 received the call at 6:00 p.m.

According to Smithville Airport Manager Joe Johnson, the pilot Jeff Parker took off from the runway in a Piper Comanche and was about 200 feet off the ground when his engine quit. The plane came down in a field beside Cordell Love Road near the airport. Parker was taken by DeKalb EMS to Saint Thomas DeKalb Hospital.

Members of the Smithville Police and DeKalb County Sheriff’s Departments were on the scene along with the DeKalb County Volunteer Fire Department. The FAA has also been notified.
