A 20 year old Smithville man was airlifted after a one car rollover crash today (Monday) on Highway 288 near Jefferson Road in the Keltonburg Community.

Trooper Bobby Johnson of the Tennessee Highway Patrol said Payton France was traveling east in a 1999 Chevy Lumina when he failed to negotiate a curve and went off the left side of the road. The car crashed  through a fence and clipped a utility pole before overturning in a field and coming to rest on its top. A passerby spotted the wreck and pulled France from the car.

He was treated at the scene by DeKalb EMS and taken nearby to a helicopter landing zone at the Keltonburg Fire Station. France was then airlifted to a medical facility in Knoxville.

A Smithville man who assaulted a woman and locked her inside his home against her will make a court appearance on December 19.

22 year old Ronald Barbosa Gutierrez of East Main Street is charged with kidnapping (false imprisonment) and aggravated assault. He is under a $25,000 bond.

Sheriff Patrick Ray said that on December 12 a deputy was called to Allen Street, Smithville due to a fight. Upon arrival he spoke to a woman who had a large knot on her forehead and marks on her neck. She reported that Gutierrez had pushed her to the ground, hit her in the head twice with a beer bottle, and tried to choke her as she held her four month old son. Gutierrez then locked her inside the residence and would not let her leave. Gutierrez also started a physical confrontation with the woman’s brother who was at the home.

36 year old Jennie Michelle McDaniel of Hayes Ridge Road, Lancaster is charged with aggravated assault, aggravated burglary, and domestic assault. Her bond totals $15,000 and she will be in court on January 9.

Sheriff Ray said that on December 14 McDaniel forced her way into a residence on Oak Drive and assaulted her husband and another woman. McDaniel struck the woman in the face causing swelling and a bruise under her left eye. McDaniel also tried to choke her husband, struck him in the face, and tried to stab him with a screwdriver and box cutter. He suffered scratches to his neck, red marks on his neck and face, and a small cut on his left palm.

26 year old Chad Stephen Taylor of Cleveland Way, Smithville is cited for possession of methamphetamine. While serving an arrest warrant, an officer found in Taylor’s bedroom a white clear crystal substance believed to be methamphetamine. The meth was in plain view. His court date is January 19.

Voters urged to seek accurate information from appropriate sources during 2020 election season

As the 2020 elections approach, voters are encouraged to seek accurate information from the appropriate source—local and state election officials.

“It is imperative for everyone to understand that election officials are the verified and trusted sources for election information,” said Dennis Stanley, DeKalb County Administrator of Elections.

“We’ve all heard the stories about outside interference with the 2016 presidential election, and it’s time to remind voters that not all information on Facebook and social media is accurate,” Stanley continued. “If voters will simply seek information from election officials, we can cut down on the misinformation and disinformation that can surround elections.”

“In simple terms, voters are urged to turn to their state and local election officials for election questions—from voter registration to polling locations, voting methods and more,” he added.

In addition, Stanley urged voters to follow WJLE and WJLE.com along with “verified accounts” of the chief state election official on social media for election information, news and updates.
