An Alexandria man is charged with assaulting his father and the deputy who was trying to arrest him.

28 year old Andrew Dayton West of Tramel Branch Road will be in court on September 19 for assault, aggravated assault (domestic related), and resisting stop, frisk, halt, arrest, or search. His bond totals $11,500.

Sheriff Patrick Ray said that on September 7 a deputy was dispatched to the West home due to a possible physical domestic between a father and son.

Upon arrival the deputy spoke with West’s father who said that his son (Andrew) had grabbed him by the throat trying to strangle him and he slammed his head into a car window. The victim said he became dizzy from the assault and almost passed out as his son was trying to strangle him. The victim  had red marks on the side of his neck and he complained that his throat was hurting and that he had a hard time swallowing.

As the officer confronted Andrew in the back yard, he became irritated and charged toward the deputy swinging his arms in an attempt to hit him. The deputy stepped back to avoid being hit in the face but he was struck on the arm. While being placed under arrest, Andrew continued to be hostile toward the officer and tried to pull his hands away to keep from being handcuffed.

An inmate has been charged with injuring another prisoner in an assault at the jail

38 year old Jerry Shawn Kelsey of Sparta, charged with assault, is under a $3,500 bond and he will be in court September 19.

Sheriff Ray said that on September 5 Kelsey assaulted another inmate causing bodily injury and resulting in the victim having to be transported to  the hospital. Jail surveillance video showed that Kelsey was the aggressor in the assault.

63 year old Johnny Wayne Trapp of Holmes Creek Road, Smithville is charged with public intoxication. His bond is $1,500 and he will be in court December 5.

Sheriff Ray said that on September 3 a deputy responded to Sparta Highway due to a man possibly intoxicated who was observed lying in a ditch. Upon arrival the officer found the man, Trapp lying on the side of the road. He appeared to be intoxicated. Trapp was arrested because of the possible danger to himself and the public.
