Dollar General Soon to Open It’s Fifth Store in DeKalb County

DeKalb County will soon be getting a new Dollar General Store.

The site, currently under development, is located on Highway 56 south near Magness Road. It is reportedly scheduled to open June 13. It will become the fifth Dollar General Store in DeKalb County. The company has applied for an “off” premises permit to sell beer at the new location. The county beer board will consider the application June 10 at 7 p.m. at the courthouse.

Dollar General Corp. is a U.S. chain of variety stores headquartered in Goodlettsville, Tennessee.

The stores were founded in 1939 by Cal Turner in Scottsville, Kentucky as J.L. Turner & Son, Inc. In 1968, the business changed its name to Dollar General Corporation. In 2007, the company was acquired by the private equity firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. (KKR), which took the company public in 2009.

Dollar General offers both name brand and generic merchandise — including off-brand goods and closeouts of name-brand items — in the same store, often on the same shelf. Although it has the word “dollar” in the name, Dollar General is not a dollar store. Most of its products are priced at more than $1.00. However, goods are usually sold at set price points of penny items and up to the range of 50 to 60 dollars, not counting phone cards and loadable store gift cards.

Dollar General often serves communities that are too small for Wal-Marts (although many locations are in relatively close driving distance to a Wal-Mart store). It competes in the dollar store format with national chains Family Dollar and Dollar Tree, regional chains such as Fred’s in the southeast, and numerous independently owned stores.

Since the turn of the century, Dollar General has also experimented with stores that carry a greater selection of grocery items. These stores (similar to the Wal-Mart Supercenter, but much smaller) operate under the name “Dollar General Market”.

Children and caregivers are invited to gather at Edgar Evins State Park for a party on Saturday, June 1 for a National Trails Day Ribbon Cutting on a new book for the ½ mile Hillside Storybook Trail.

This free event to be held from 10 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. will include party favors, craft making for the children sponsored by the public libraries of DeKalb, Putnam, Smith, Cannon and the Cookeville Children’s Museum and Smithville Girl Scout Troop 3094.

Bob Tarter of Animology (formerly NHECM) will present an assortment of wild animals at 11:30 A.M.

The book this year will be Anybody Home?, by Marianne Berkes and illustrated by Rebeccca Dickinson. It is about Polly Possum looking for a home among the forest creatures where she can raise her expected babies.

Hotdogs, chips, lemonade and cake will be served about 12:30 P.M. The trail has large color reproductions of pages from the book on signs that are mounted at child height about every 60 yards along the trail. There will be guided and unguided hikes on the trail after the ribbon is cut . (It is on a hillside so expect some mild elevation changes.) Everything will be free unless purchased from a vendor or the on-site gift store where the book will be available.

10:45 A.M.- OPEN TRAIL FOR ANYONE BUT THERE WILL BE GUIDES AVAILABLE A BIT LATER FOR ANYONE WHO NEEDS HELP READING THE STORY SIGNS ALONG THE TRAIL OR HELPING KEEP KIDS TOGETHER – If you need a guide let Anna Bertram know so she can find one for you.

The 2019 DCHS Tiger basketball Most Valuable Player was awarded Wednesday for becoming a member of the 1,000 point club.

Roy Nelson Pugh of Liberty State Bank presented a plaque to Tanner Poss for scoring 1,159 points in his high school basketball career. Poss actually reached the 1,000 point milestone during his junior year but added to his point total during his 2018-19 senior year after returning to the line-up in mid-season following an injury.

“This is our way at Liberty State Bank of congratulating Tanner on his accomplishments,” said Pugh.

“I only got to coach him one year but he is a heck of a kid and player. I wish I had him around more. We didn’t get him back in good form from his injury until probably January but he helped us out when he came back. We will certainly miss him for sure. Had he not been injured Tanner may have scored as many as 1,500 career points, “said Tiger Coach John Sanders.

“This is very special to me. After the injury it was hard getting back on track but after I returned I wanted to end the season strong. It was Coach Sanders’ first season here and I wanted to give him everything I had and it was special for me to get to finish my senior season with him so everything ended up good,” said Poss.

Tanner, who graduated two weeks ago, now plans to further his education in college.
