Steven Jennings Pitches into Fifth Inning In Season Opener for Grasshoppers

His team earned the season-opening victory, but former DeKalb County High School standout Steven Jennings did not pick up the win.

Jennings pitched into the fifth inning of the Greensboro Grasshoppers 9-8 victory over the Hagerstown Suns Thursday.

According to the News and Record web site, Jennings pitched in and out of trouble during his time on the mound, allowing baserunners in every inning and four earned runs on eight hits. However, 50 of his 82 pitches were strikes and he walked only one batter.

According to the report, the Greensboro manager was impressed with the opening-day performance.

“The way he handled himself tonight on the mound was tremendous,” said Hoppers manager Miguel Peréz, who managed Jennings in Bristol last season. “He fought and competed, always focused on the next pitch. He got off the field, sat down and was calm, thinking about how to attack the next hitter. I was happy to see that.”
