Outreach Baptist Church Wins Top Honor during Festival of Trees Event

More than 1,200 toys were collected for DeKalb County Foster Children during last week’s 1st Annual Festival of Trees held at the County Complex.

Outreach Baptist Church took top honors for DeKalb County Tree of the Year and the tree with the Most Touching Theme. To be named Tree of the Year, it had to have the most gifts placed under it for foster children. The 50+ Club collected over 50 toys including the 4-H Club, the office of Dr. Cliff Duke, DDS; Town & Lake Realty;  Smithville Assembly of God;  Middle Tennessee Tae Kwon Do; Creations By Donna; and Coordinated School Help .

Patrons to the event last Monday came bearing gifts which they placed under their favorite tree along Holly Hall, Candy Cane Lane, Cookies Café, and Stocking Theatre.

Last Monday night’s event also featured FREE pictures with Santa and Mrs. Claus on the North Pole Stage, refreshments in the Cookies Café, and the Christmas Shopping Court where more than 20 vendor booths displayed delightful Christmas gift ideas for sale.

West Assaults Deputy During Arrest

28 year old Andrew Dayton West of Tramel Branch Road, Alexandria is charged with assault on an officer. His bond is $10,000 and he will make a court appearance on December 20

Sheriff Patrick Ray said that on Monday, December 10 a deputy was assisting a Smithville Police Officer on a traffic stop when the driver of the vehicle, West became violent and struck the deputy in the jaw with a closed fist trying to evade arrest.

Smithville Police have also filed separate charges against West.




Hodges Charged with Evading Arrest

A McMinnville man who borrowed a car and then tried to outrun the law has been charged with evading arrest.

34 year old Joshua Walter Hodges of Old Post Road, McMinnville is under a $4,500 bond and he will make a court appearance on December 13.

Sheriff Patrick Ray said that on Friday, November 2 a deputy tried to stop a silver Dodge Stratus on Short Mountain Road for a tail light out but when he turned on his blue lights the car failed to stop. The deputy then activated his siren but the car sped up to 95 miles per hour trying to evade arrest. After the car crossed into Cannon County the officer terminated the pursuit. After a further investigation officers contacted the owner of the car who informed them that he gave Hodges  permission to drive the car and that Hodges was still in possession of it at the time of the pursuit.

42 year old Christopher Daniel Gibbs of Sims Street, Dowelltown is charged with a 4th offense of driving under the influence, a 4th offense of driving on a revoked license, and evading arrest. His bond totals $15,000 and he will make a court appearance on December 20

Sheriff Ray said that on Friday, December 7 a deputy conducted a traffic stop on a Chevy S-10 with no tail lights. The driver, Gibbs abandoned the truck and tried to flee on foot but he was apprehended. Gibbs had an odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his person. His eyes were glassy and his pupils very constricted. Gibbs submitted to but performed poorly on field sobriety tasks. Gibbs already has three prior DUI offenses against him which occurred in 2007, 2011, and 2015. He also has three prior convictions for driving on a revoked license. Gibbs admitted to having consumed suboxone, marijuana, methamphetamine, and a 24 ounce beer earlier in the day.

54 year old Glenda Marie Hendrixson of Petty Road, Smithville is charged with driving under the influence. She has a $1,500 bond and her court date is December 20.

Sheriff Ray said that on Saturday, December 8 a deputy was patrolling on McMinnville Highway when he noticed a vehicle off to the side of the road. Someone was in the driver seat with her head down. He stopped to investigate and found the keys to the automobile in the ignition. The driver, Hendrixson had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from her person. She submitted to but performed poorly on field sobriety tasks.
