By: Dwayne Page

Tennessee Republican gubernatorial nominee Bill Lee will make a campaign stop in Smithville today (Friday) as part of his 95 county General Election “Believe in Tennessee” tour.

Lee will be at the DeKalb County Complex from 3:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. to meet and greet the public.

“I’ve said throughout this campaign that Tennessee is a really good place to live, but in business, we know that good is the enemy of great,” said Lee. “For Tennessee to reach her full potential and lead the nation, we need to challenge the status quo and prioritize leadership over politics.”

DeKalb County High School is working to recognize students making strides on the ACT test. As part of the TN Department of Education’s Tennessee Succeeds initiative, the state is working to increase the state average for student ACT scores to 21 by the year 2020. The current ACT average at DCHS is 18.1. This year, DCHS is again able to offer a free ACT re-take to all seniors during the school day, and this will take place on October 2nd. A free ACT will also be offered to all juniors April 2nd. The ACT serves as a gateway to college and career readiness in Tennessee, determining students’ eligibility for the HOPE scholarship, requirements for postsecondary remedial or developmental coursework, and sometimes entry-level salary. At DCHS, a 21+ Club has been formed for students that have met this ACT readiness benchmark. This club currently contains 78 students. DCHS also has a 29+ club which includes 12 students who have scored a 29 or higher on their ACT.
