DCHS Fishing Team Members Reel In Awards at Saturday Tournament

The North Central Tennessee Trail Tournament was held on March 4th on Center Hill Lake. Anglers with Tennessee Bass Nation High School participated with roughly around 150 boats competing.

The DCHS Fishing Team kicked off the 2nd half of its season with the girls, Emma Johnson and Rowan Miller, weighing in fish at 5.48 pounds on the Hill. Next up were Marshall Farler and Hunter Cannon who weighed in one fish for a total of 2.31 pounds. Hasten Waggoner and Jaxon Humphrey weighed in two fish with a total of 2.91 pounds. Tyler Dunn and Garrison Randolph also fished in the tournament.

Mason Taylor and Wesley Kent had a total of 19.11 pounds. They came in second place and received nice plaques and a scholarship check.

Debris including fallen trees and tree limbs from Friday’s high winds forced the DeKalb County Highway Department to spring into action over the weekend.

“From Friday into Friday night and through about 1:30 a.m. Saturday morning we cleaned out 32 roads and got them to where people could get in and out,” said Road Supervisor Danny Hale. “We went back out on two more roads Saturday morning and we have been out this morning (Monday) cleaning up the sides of the roads from where we just cleared the roadways,”

“We ask for the public to please be aware of our workers this week as we will have some roads blocked cleaning up debris. Sorry for any inconvenience and thank you ahead of time for your patience,” said Road Supervisor Hale.

Meanwhile, starting March 20, Lower Helton Road on the Hickman Road end will be closed to through traffic due to a bridge replacement

The D.C.H.S. Winter Guard took home a fourth-place finish at Summit High School competition in Spring Hill over the weekend. The team improved from 8th place in its class two weekends earlier.

“The team pumped up the crowd with their enthusiasm and exciting performance,” Winter Guard Coach Shannon Johns said. “The members getting into character really brings the show to life and pulls the audience in with them. By the time we get to “Boogie Shoes” (our 4th song), the crowd is ready to come join the soul train line we form to close out the performance.”

“I’m so proud of our students and what they have accomplished so far,” Band Director Don Whitt said. “They keep on improving every week. Shannon Johns is doing a tremendous job. What I love about our team’s mentality is that the show is so relatable. I like our teams to play to the audience. People know the movie “Saturday Night Fever,” and they like the music of that era.”

“Another thing I love about our Winter Guard is that they use people’s strengths,” Whitt adds. “In this show you can see everyone who will do dance moves from the 1970s. You will see hula hoops and even roller skating. I loved hearing the people in the stands around me that were saying wow they really put a lot of thought and research behind this. I bet they will score high. They were amazing. This is a marvelous and talented young team. If you have a chance to get to go to a Winter Guard competition you need to.”

The guard competes next at Columbia Central on March 18.
