DeKalb County Fair Opens Tonight (Monday)

The DeKalb County Fair returns for its annual weeklong run Monday through Saturday, July 11-16.
With the theme “Hometown Heroes This Fair is For You in 2022″, the 166th edition will feature another fun filled week of rides by B&K Carnival and many crowd-pleasing activities and events including the Demolition Derby, ATV/Motorcycle Racing, Super Truck & Tractor Pull, Pageants, the Lip Sync Battle, Car Show, Grill-Off and Ice Cream Contest, Poultry, Cattle, Goat, and Pet Show, Hay Decorating, and much more. Cash drawings will be held each night.
DeKalb Fair President Matt Boss said this year’s fair is dedicated to “Hometown Heroes”.
“The Fair Board decided that we wanted to recognize the Hometown Heroes of DeKalb County and dedicate each night of the fair to them including our fire departments, police departments, DeKalb EMS, sheriff’s department, military, highway patrol, rescue squad and other people we consider Hometown Heroes in DeKalb County,” said Boss.
The schedule of Fair events each night is as follows:
Monday, July 11:
*Cattle Show at the Ag Center- 6:00 p.m.
*Demolition Derby at the T.C. McMillen Arena- 7:00 p.m.
*Junior Fair Princess Pageant for contestants ages 13-16 at 6:00 p.m. followed by the Fairest of the Fair Pageant for contestants ages 17 to 20 at the Lions Club Pavilion
*Miss Fair Queen for contestants ages 21-54 at the Lions Club Pavilion following the Fairest of the Fair Pageant
*Lip Sync Battle (Round 1) at the Lions Club Pavilion following the Miss Fair Queen
*Cash Drawing-9:30 p.m. at the Lions Club Pavilion
Tuesday, July 12:
*Little Mister for contestants ages 4-6: 6:00 p.m. at the Lions Club Pavilion
*Little Miss for contestants ages 4-6 following the Little Mister Pageant
*Mrs. Fair Queen for contestants up to age 54 at the Lions Club Pavilion following the Little Miss Pageant
*Miss Senior Fair Queen for contestants ages 55 and older at the Lions Club Pavilion following the Mrs. Fair Queen Pageant

Take a stroll down Memory Lane which features replicas of Prichard’s Motors, DeKalb Telephone Cooperative, Jennings’ Barber Shop, DeKalb Community Bank, Alexandria Drug Store, Jennings Produce, Alexandria Mercantile, and DeKalb County Fair Veterans Building.
Enjoy Memory Lane Stage Entertainment which includes Body Boutique by “B” Monday night at 6:00 p.m.; Hart & Gold Permanent Jewelry & Bag Bar Tuesday night; Outreach Kids Choir at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday night; and Susan England at 7:00 p.m. on Friday night. More acts to be booked later.
Rides on the Midway will be provided by B&K Carnival. Unlimited rides will be available for $20.00 on Monday night through Thursday night and $25.00 on Friday night and Saturday night.
Admission to the fair is $5.00 per person. Children age four and younger will be admitted free! Gates and Midway open at 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. The exhibit building is open from 5:00 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and Saturday from 4:00 p.m. until 9:30 p.m.

Voters to Decide State Primary Races

The Tennessee Democratic and Republican parties will have primaries on Thursday, August 4th to select nominees for Governor, U.S. House of Representatives, Tennessee House of Representatives and State Executive Committeemen and Committeewomen.
Early Voting begins Friday, July 15 and runs through Saturday, July 30. Unlike the DeKalb County General Election and Municipal Elections, voters must declare in which state primary (Democratic or Republican) they intend to vote either during early voting or on election day.
The most hotly contested state primary race in DeKalb County is the 40th District State Representative Republican Primary battle between 14-year incumbent Terri Lynn Weaver of Lancaster and Smithville businessman Michael Hale. The winner will face Democrat Tom Cook of Silver Point in the November 8th Tennessee General Election. Cook is unopposed in the state Democratic Primary on August 4.
The 40th District includes all of DeKalb, Smith, Jackson, and Cannon Counties and a small portion of Wilson County.
The candidates on the State Primary Ballots August 4th are as follows:

GOP Primary: Incumbent Bill Lee
Democrat Primary: Carnita Faye Atwater of Memphis , Jason Brantley Martin of Nashville, and JB Smiley Jr. of Memphis
U.S. House of Representatives (6th District)
GOP Primary: Incumbent John Rose of Cookeville
Democrat Primary: Randal Cooper of Nashville and Clay Faircloth of Nashville
Tennessee House of Representatives (40th District)
GOP Primary: Incumbent Terri Lynn Weaver of Lancaster and Michael Hale of Smithville.
Democrat Primary: Tom Cook of Silver Point
GOP State Executive Committeeman (16th District): Jerry S. Anderson of Winchester
GOP State Executive Committeewoman (16th District): Amy L. Dennis of Winchester

Meanwhile the August 4 ballot will also feature 26 State Judicial Retention questions in which voters may vote to either “retain” or “replace” judges
Early voting times are as follows at the DeKalb County Courthouse in Smithville: Mondays 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.; Tuesdays 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.; Wednesdays 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.; Thursdays 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.; Fridays 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m. until Noon. Early voting will also be held again in the western part of the county on a limited basis. The DeKalb County Fairgrounds will be the site of early voting on July 19th from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and on July 25 from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. Each early voting site is for any properly registered DeKalb County voter.

The DeKalb County General Election on Thursday, August 4 will feature four contested races for county offices including County Mayor, General Sessions Court Judge, Register of Deeds and Road Supervisor.
Early Voting begins Friday, July 15 and runs through Saturday, July 30.
Former County Mayor Mike Foster, a Democrat, is hoping for a return to the office but he is facing a challenge from Republican Matt Adcock, who currently serves on the county commission. The term is 4 years beginning September 1
Local attorneys Brandon Cox, a Republican and Tecia Puckett Pryor, a Democrat are running against each other to determine who succeeds retiring General Sessions Court Judge Bratten Cook, II. The winner will take over from Judge Cook on September 1, who will be completing 24 years on the bench as DeKalb County’s General Sessions and Juvenile Court Judge. The term of office is 8 years.
Republican Daniel Seber and Democrat Shelby Reeder are in the race to see who will succeed longtime Register of Deeds Jeff McMillen, who is retiring August 31 after 36 years in office. The term is 4 years.
Meanwhile, Republican Incumbent Road Supervisor Danny Hale, seeking his second- 4-year term, is being challenged for re-election by Democrat Wayne Shehane.
The other county officials up for re-election to new 4-year terms, all Incumbent Republicans, are running unopposed as follows:
County Clerk James L. (Jimmy) Poss enroute to a third term
Trustee Sean Driver seeking his fifth term
Circuit Court Clerk Susan Martin looking toward her second term.
Sheriff Patrick Ray on his way to fifth term.
