Incumbent County Mayor Tim Stribling Loses to Mike Foster in Democratic Primary while Matt Adcock defeats two challengers to claim GOP Primary Win

Two term County Mayor Tim Stribling lost his bid for re-election Tuesday in the DeKalb County Democratic Primary.

Mike Foster, the former three term County Mayor, unseated Stribling 581 to 538. Eight years ago, Stribling ousted Foster in the Democratic Primary and narrowly beat him again in a 2018 rematch winning by only seven votes.

As the Democratic nominee, Foster will face Sixth district County Commissioner Matt Adcock in the August 4 County General Election. Adcock won the Republican nomination for County Mayor on Tuesday.

Adcock defeated two opponents, Fifth District County Commissioner Anita Puckett and former County Commissioner Bradley Hendrix. Adcock won with 944 votes to 735 for Puckett and 527 for Hendrix.

In the Democratic Primary, Foster had a majority of the early votes/ absentees and won six of the twelve precincts including Alexandria, Blue Springs, County Complex, Courthouse, Liberty, and Temperance Hall. Stribling carried the remaining six precincts including the Church of Christ Annex, Johnson Chapel, Keltonburg, Rock Castle, Church of God, and Snow Hill.

Adcock had a majority of the early votes/absentees in the Republican Primary and carried nine precincts including Blue Springs, Church of Christ Annex, County Complex, Johnson Chapel, Keltonburg, Liberty, Rock Castle, Smithville Church of God, and Temperance Hall. Adcock and Hendrix tied to carry the Snow Hill precinct. Puckett carried Alexandria and the Courthouse precinct.

Stribling’s term ends August 31.

Incumbents Jenny Trapp in the Third District and Jerry Adcock in the Fifth District were unseated in their bids for re-election to the DeKalb County Commission in Tuesday’s primary elections.

Former County Commissioner Jack Barton earned 111 votes, while Susannah Cripps Daughtry garnered 110 votes to defeat Trapp, who had 97 total votes in the DeKalb County Democratic Primary. Barton and Daughtry will move on to face Republican Tim Perricone and Independent Tony Luna in the August General Election, with two to be elected. Perricone received 217 complimentary votes in the DeKalb GOP Primary Tuesday

Meanwhile, Larry Green led the Fifth District ballot with 173 votes, while Glynn Merriman tallied 149 votes to unseat incumbent Jerry Adcock in the Republican Primary. Adcock finished third with 118 total votes, while Steve Merriman, Sr. had 79 votes and Joshua Holloway finished with 68. Green and Merriman will be unopposed in the August General Election and will be the new representatives from the Fifth District on the DeKalb County Commission.

Greg Matthews and Tony “Cully” Culwell were winners in the DeKalb Republican Primary for the County Commission in the Fourth District. Matthews had 192 votes and Culwell 166. Dan Delacruz came in third place with 86 votes. Matthews and Culwell will face Democratic incumbent Janice Fish-Stewart and Independent candidate and former commissioner Wayne Cantrell in the August 4th General Election. Stewart received 150 complimentary votes in the DeKalb Democratic Primary Tuesday.

All other county commission candidates were unopposed in their respective primaries on Tuesday. Here are the results:

First District:  Incumbent Julie Williams Young received 73 votes in the Democratic Primary while Tom Chandler got 159 and Bennett Armstrong 123 votes in the Republican Primary. All three will be on the General Election ballot on August 4^th along with Independent candidate Daniel Cripps. Two are to be elected

Second District: Incumbent Myron Rhody garnered 103 votes in the Democratic Primary while Incumbent Sabrina Farler received 249 votes and Jim Pearson 183 in the Republican Primary. All three will be on the ballot in August. Two will be elected.

Sixth District: Incumbent Jeff Barnes got 115 votes and Danny McGinnis 77 in the Democratic Primary while Justin Douglas Adcock received 188 votes and Doug Stephens 140 in the Republican Primary. All four will be on the ballot in August. Two will be elected.

Seventh District: Incumbent Bruce Malone received 130 votes and Tim Reynolds 136 in the Republican Primary. Incumbent Beth Pafford garnered 103 votesin the Democratic Primary. All three will be on the ballot in August. Two will be elected.

Board of Education races are as follows:

First District-No Democratic or Republican candidates. Incumbent Danny Parkerson will be seeking re-election unopposed as an Independent candidate in the August General Election.

Second District: Incumbent Alan Hayes received 333 complimentary votes in the GOP Primary Tuesday. He was unopposed and will be without opposition in the August General Election

Third District: Incumbent Jim Beshearse got 292 votes running unopposed in the Republican Primary and he will be without opposition in the August Election.

Fourth District: Eric Ervin received 258 votes unopposed in the GOP Primary Tuesday while Scott Little had 149 votes unopposed in the Democratic Primary. Independent candidate Tony Poss will join them on the August election ballot and the winner will succeed Incumbent Kate Miller who did not seek re-election.

Seventh District: Ryan Mollinet got 204 votes running unopposed in the GOP Primary. He will face Incumbent Shaun Tubbs in the August General Election. Tubbs is running as an Independent.

A woman caught tossing a bottle of whiskey to an inmate on a work detail has been charged with bringing contraband into a penal institution.

42-year-old Abigail Vogel of South College Street, Smithville is under a $5,000 bond and she will be in court May 19. Sheriff Patrick Ray said that on May 1 while supervising inmates cleaning the grounds of the jail, a correctional officer spotted Vogel toss something toward a prisoner who was mowing. The correctional officer retrieved the item, which was found to be a bottle, half filled with Jim Beam whiskey.

52-year-old Michael Steven Conners of Possum Hollow Road, Dowelltown is charged with aggravated assault. His bond is $10,000 and he will be in court April 28. Sheriff Ray said that on April 13 a deputy answered a call of a possible domestic assault and upon arrival spoke with the victim who reported that she was assaulted by her husband, Conners. The woman said she was struck several times in the head and face and she showed visible and physical evidence of abuse. The victim said Conners hit her about the head with a broom and that he threw a knife at her. He then picked up the knife and left the residence. Conners was already gone by the time the officer arrived. He was picked up a few days later.

50-year-old David Eugene Driver of Arrowhead Drive, Smithville is charged with a seventh offense of driving on a revoked license. He was also cited for no insurance and a display of license plate violation. His bond is $3,500 and he will make a court appearance May 12. Sheriff Ray said that on April 23 a deputy conducted a traffic stop on a gray Chevy S-10, driven by Driver, which had an obstruction on the license tag that made it unreadable. Knowing that Driver’s license was revoked, the officer placed him under arrest.

29-year-old Austin Duane Sigler of Tabernacle Road, Smithville is charged with unlawful possession of a weapon. His bond is $5,000 and he will be in court May 19. Sheriff Ray said that on March 15 Sigler filed an official theft report with a deputy at the sheriff’s office with a list of items taken including a 9 millimeter Beretta handgun valued at $800. Sigler, a convicted felon, is not legally allowed to possess firearms.

39-year-old David Brian Martin of Sparta is charged with possession of a schedule VI drug with intent to sell or deliver. His bond is $5,000 and he will be in court on May 12. Sheriff Ray said that on April 25 a deputy conducted a traffic stop after the driver of the vehicle failed to give a signal. While talking to the driver, Martin, the deputy obtained consent to search the vehicle and found in the back seat 4.25 ounces of a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana in a gift bag.

40-year-old Joshua Leslie Johnson of Hendrixson Road, Smithville is charged with criminal impersonation. His bond is $3,500 and he will be in court May 19. Sheriff Ray said that on April 29 a deputy met Johnson on Cookeville Highway while searching for another person with active warrants. The officer asked Johnson for his name and date of birth and he replied that he was John Johnson and gave his birth date as December 7 although he could not remember the year. The officer later learned Johnson’s real name.

32 year old Blake Johnathon McHone of West Broad Street, Smithville is charged with being a fugitive from justice. His bond is $75,000 and he will he in court May 19. Sheriff Ray said that on April 28 McHone was arrested for another offense when a background check through the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) revealed that McHone was wanted in Greenville County, South Carolina. Authorities there were notified and plan to extradite McHone.
