TBI Investigating DeKalb Shooting and Stabbing
May 1, 2020

Two men were airlifted by helicopter ambulance Thursday night after being wounded in a shooting and stabbing during an altercation which began at a residence on Adcock Cemetery Road.
The shooter, a 23 year old man, suffered stab wounds. The gunshot victim is a 20 year old man. The names of the men have not yet been released by the TBI who is investigating the case.
According to a statement released by Sheriff Patrick Ray, the altercation started at a residence on Adcock Cemetery Road.
“On Thursday at 3:39 p.m. central dispatch received a call from an individual who said he was taking (driving) a 20 year old man with gunshot wounds to the emergency room of the hospital and that they were being chased by the shooter”.
Upon arrival at the emergency room, city (Smithville Police) and county (DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department) officers learned that the person in the vehicle following the gunshot victim was not the shooter.
“More officers went to the address on Adcock Cemetery Road and during an investigation at the scene received information of a possible suspect and the vehicle he was driving. With that information, a “BE ON THE LOOKOUT” (BOLO) was issued to surrounding counties.
Officers later spotted and stopped the vehicle on Prater Road in the Four Seasons area. Three persons were in the car but neither of them was the suspected shooter. The vehicle was impounded and towed to the jail for evidence processing.
At 5:54 p.m., more than two hours after the initial call to central dispatch, the suspected shooter showed up at the hospital and was spotted there by officers.
Both the gunshot and stabbing victims were airlifted to an undisclosed hospital.
Agencies on all three scenes (hospital, Adcock Cemetery Road, Prater Road) were Sheriff Patrick Ray, officers from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department, 13th District Attorney Bryant Dunaway and members of the District Attorney General’s Office, agents from the Tennessee Bureau of investigation, officers from Smithville Police Department, and Constable Mark Milam.
The investigation is ongoing.

Its graduation time at LBJ& C Smithville Head Start Center but the Class of 2020 will be recognized in a different manner from those of prior years due to COVID-19.
Instead of a ceremony for the children, teachers, and parents at the county complex, this year’s head start graduation will take the form of a drive through on Wednesday, May 6 from 10 a.m. until 12 noon at the center on Kimberly Lane.
“We will have staff members positioned six feet apart for social distancing as the parents drive through with their children. I will hand out to the students their completion ribbons, a staff member will pass out graduation hats to those moving on to kindergarten, and teachers will present their diplomas along with any needed art supplies, homework packets, and personal belongings left at the school since the closure of the center several weeks ago,” said Director Cathy Shehane.
“It will be an emotional time for us but it gives us an opportunity do a welfare check on the students, ask how they are doing, and get to see their whole families again. We love all our students and their families,” added Shehane.
