Smithville Parade and Christmas on the Square Brings Out Holiday Spirit

A community filled with the spirit of Christmas showed up for the fun and excitement of the annual Smithville Christmas Parade and Christmas On the Square Saturday evening downtown.
The parade offered something for everyone from holiday themed floats, horseback riders and wagons, pageant royalty, the DCHS band, vintage automobiles, and of course, Santa Claus plus much more.
Mr. and Miss DeKalb County, Smithville Mayor Josh Miller and Smithville Alderman Beth Chandler served as Grand Marshals while Aaron and Thea Tippin were the parade’s honorary Grand Marshals.
Prior to the parade Smithville’s Frosty Flakes led by Bee Tubbs Trigueros performed in front of the reviewing stand while Mary Ann Puckett’s square dance teams took the stage at Evins Park.
DeKalb Funeral Chapel won first place for the best float entry. Bubba’s Auction House took second place and Whorton Springs Baptist Church captured third place. The Spirit award went to the Lady Rangers Softball Team.
The Liberty Christmas Parade is scheduled today (Sunday, December 8th) at 2 PM Line-up at 1 PM at Salem Baptist Church.
The Alexandria Christmas Parade will be Saturday, December 14th at 2 PM . Line-up at 1 PM on West Main Street in Alexandria.
DCHS Crowns Basketball Baron and Baroness (View video here)

DCHS closed out Alumni week Friday night in Smithville by crowning the 2024 Baron and Baroness and with the Tigers and Lady Tigers hosting Watertown.
The Lady Tigers lost their game 58 to 40 while the Tigers knocked off the purple Tigers in the nightcap 78 to 36.
Prior to the games, the Alumni Homecoming ceremony was held to recognize the 2024 Baron and Baroness Dallas Kirby and Madeline Martin, both Seniors. Kirby is a member of the Tiger basketball team and Martin is a basketball captain cheerleader. Dallas is the son of Chad and Shelia Kirby. Martin’s parents are Tim and Michiko Martin.
Each year a member of both the Tiger and Lady Tiger basketball programs are honored with the title of “Baron” and “Baroness.”
The DCHS Alumni Homecoming Attendants were: Freshmen Hartley Hannah and Lola Ruth Colwell; Sophomores Kiece Hannah and McKenzie Moss; Juniors Jon Hendrix and Chloe VanVranken; and Seniors Andrew Dakas and Avery Agee.
Freshman attendants: Hartley Hannah is the son of Dallas and Ashley Hannah and Lola Colwell is the daughter of Chad and Deana Ruth Colwell.
Sophomore attendants: Keice Hannah, son of Dallas and Ashley Hannah, and McKenzie Moss is the daughter of Jennifer Taylor.
Junior attendants: Jon Hendrix, son of Bradley and Lori Hendrix and Chloe Van Vranken, daughter of Zach and Kristen VanVranken.
Senior attendants: Andrew Dakas, son of John Dakas and Amanda Fanning, and Avery Agee, daughter of Joey and Casey Agee.
“Alumni Week” is observed at DCHS much in the same way as homecoming week is celebrated during the football season and each year a member of both the Tiger and Lady Tiger basketball programs are honored with the title of “Baron” and “Baroness”. The name “Baron” and “Baroness” is taken from Revolutionary War hero Major General Baron Johann De Kalb for whom DeKalb County was named when the county was created by the Tennessee General Assembly in 1837.
In the girls game Friday night, Watertown led 13 to 3 after the 1st period, 27 to 12 at halftime, and 44 to 29 after the 3rd period before notching a 58 to 40 win over DeKalb County.
For the Lady Tigers, Allie Melton and Jordyn Agee each scored 14, Chloe Van Vranken 7, Avery Agee 4, and Lillie Young with 1.
The DC Tigers claimed a 78 to 36 win over the visiting purple Tigers. DC led 22 to 6 after the 1st period, 35 to 15 at halftime, and 64 to 26 after the 3rd period.
Elliot Barnes led the Tigers in scoring with 17 followed by Jordan Parker with 14, Chase Young and David Wheeler each with 9, Jon Hendrix 8, Seth Fuson 7, Dallas Kirby 5, Logan Duke 4, Ben Driver 3, and J.T. Summers 2.
The Tigers (2-5) and the Lady Tigers (2-5) will host Cannon County Monday night, December 9. The girls game will tip off at 6 p.m. followed by the boys game and WJLE will broadcast both LIVE.
In the last meeting on November 29, Cannon County prevailed in both games over the DCHS Tigers and Lady Tigers at Woodbury.
The Lady Tigers were beaten 57 to 23 and the Tigers were upended 71 to 34.
Names Needed Now for “Love Lights a Tree” Board in Time for Christmas Parade

Names are needed now to honor and remember loved ones for the American Cancer Society’s “Love Lights A Tree” display board in time for the Smithville Christmas Parade and Christmas on the Square Saturday, December 7. “Love Lights a Tree” has been a fixture during the Christmas and New Year holidays downtown for many years.
Forms are available at the banks in the city at Region’s Bank, FirstBank, Wilson Bank & Trust and Liberty State Bank.
For a $5.00 donation to the DeKalb County Unit of the American Cancer Society you can have a name placed on the display board. You can either remember a friend or loved one lost to cancer or for any other reason. You may also honor someone still living including those who have struggled with cancer.
