The sheriff’s department hauled in a fugitive last week who was wanted in Montana.

41 year old Jason Stewart of Cookeville is charged with being a fugitive from Justice. He is under a $75,000 bond and his court date is January 10.

Stewart was arrested on Wednesday, December 19

Sheriff Patrick Ray said Stewart has a warrant against him in Hill County, Montana for assault with a deadly weapon. He will be extradited back there to face the charge.

23 year old Crystal May Smith of Miller Lane, Smithville was stopped on East Broad Street and charged with simple possession of a schedule II drug. Her court date is January 19.

Sheriff Ray said that on Sunday, December 23 a deputy stopped a black Chevy Impala, driven by Smith, knowing that someone in the car was wanted by authorities. Smith gave consent for a search of the vehicle and the officer found 0.4 grams of a crystal like substance believed to be methamphetamine on the driver’s side. Smith was cited for the offense and the other person in the vehicle was taken into custody.

39 year old Benito Castorena of Village Place, Smithville is charged with criminal impersonation and contraband in a penal institution. His bond totals $5,000 and he will make a court appearance January 10.

Sheriff Ray said that on Sunday, December 23 a deputy was called to a residence on Sparta Highway due to an unwanted guest. Upon arrival the officer spoke with a man who identified himself as Ben Garcia and said his birthday was March 21, 1978. After the man left the residence the officer learned that he had lied about his identity and that his real name is Benito Castorena with a birth date of March 21, 1979.  The deputy later located Castorena and placed him under arrest. After being brought to the jail for booking, Castorena was found to have in his coat pocket a small bag containing a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana.

23 year old Jalen Grooms of Watertown is charged with driving under the influence. Bond is $1,500 and his court date is January 10.

Sheriff Ray said that on Tuesday, December 18 a deputy responded to Edgewood Street in Alexandria in reference to a suspicious vehicle setting partially in the road and in the yard of the complainant. Upon arrival the officer found Grooms unconscious in the driver’s seat. He awoke Grooms and found his speech to be slurred and he was unaware of his surroundings. Grooms had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on his person. He performed poorly on field sobriety tasks.

36 year old Margret Rebecca Buttry of South College Street, Smithville is charged with a third offense of driving on a revoked license. Her bond is $3,000 and she will make a court appearance on January 10.

Sheriff Ray said that on Tuesday, December 18 a deputy spotted a white Toyota 4runner traveling on West Broad Street without any running lights on the rear of the vehicle. He stopped the automobile and learned from a driver license check that Buttry’s license were revoked for a DUI on July 30, 2012 in Hawkins County. Buttry also has two previous driving on revoked offenses in Hawkins County on September 19, 2012 and April 12, 2017.

47 year old Craig Anthony Hill of Holmes Creek Road, Smithville is charged with public intoxication. He is under a $3,000 bond and his court date is January 10.

Sheriff Ray said that on Saturday, December 22 a deputy responded to a residence on Adcock Cemetery Road where a man had shown up on the back porch claiming someone was chasing him. Upon arrival the officer spoke with the man, Hill who said he had been running through the woods because someone was chasing him. The deputy observed that Hill was very jittery and unable to stand still. He was sweating and his pupils were dilated. The officer determined that Hill was under the influence of an intoxicant. He was placed under arrest.

37 year old Brett McGehee, Jr. of Old Liberty Road, Alexandria is charged with domestic assault. His bond is $45,000 and he will make a court appearance on January 10.

Sheriff Ray said that on Friday, December 21 a deputy was called to the McGehee residence for a physical domestic. Upon arrival he spoke with a woman who had physical bodily injuries to her facial area. A further investigation revealed that McGehee was the primary aggressor.

33 year old Kimberly Ann Spivey of County House Road, Sparta is charged with driving under the influence and cited for violation of the move over law. Her bond is $1,500 and she will make a court appearance on January 17.

Sheriff Ray said that on Sunday, December 23 while assisting another officer with a traffic stop on Sparta Highway, a deputy spotted a vehicle approaching which forced the officers to get off the road and into a ditch. Before reaching the deputies the vehicle changed lanes and passed them at a high rate of speed. The automobile was pulled over on East Broad Street. Spivey was the driver. She had a strong odor of alcohol coming from her person and her eyes were red and watery. Spivey said she had consumed two beers and some tequila earlier. She submitted to implied consent and field sobriety tasks but performed poorly.

Neville Airlifted After Head-On Crash Near High School

A woman was airlifted with serious injuries after a head-on crash this morning (Thursday) on West Broad Street in front of DeKalb County High School.

According to Trooper Bobby Johnson of the Tennessee Highway Patrol, 42 year old Lynda Neville of Smithville was driving east in a 2000 Buick Regal when she crossed into the westbound lane and struck an oncoming 2011 Ford F250 DTC Communications  truck, driven by 33 year old Matthew Stribling of Smithville.

Neville, pinned in the car, was extricated by members of the Smithville Fire Department. She was airlifted from the parking lot of DeKalb Middle School and flown to Vanderbilt Hospital. Stribling was not seriously hurt but was taken to Ascension St. Thomas DeKalb Hospital.

DeKalb EMS and the Smithville Police Department were also on the scene. Charges are pending against Neville.

 




McMinnville Man on Probation Found with Methamphetamine

A McMinnville man on probation was found with methamphetamine during a traffic stop last week.

35 year old Jason James McKeon is charged with possession with intent to sell or deliver methamphetamine. He is also cited for possession of drug paraphernalia. McKeon  is under a $6,500 bond and his court date is January 17.

Sheriff Patrick Ray said that on Tuesday, December 18 a deputy conducted a traffic stop on a white Nissan Altima on West Broad Street. McKeon, who is on probation, was a passenger in the vehicle. McKeon submitted to a probation search and a scale was found in his front pants pocket. A search of the vehicle turned up two clear baggies which contained a crystal like substance and weighed 0.8 grams; another container with the same type substance  which weighed 0.5 grams; and a needle with 10 cc’s of a clear fluid believed to be meth. All the drugs were found in the area where McKeon was seated in the vehicle.
