Quarterback Briz Trapp threw for four touchdowns Friday night, three of them to Marquez Chalfant in leading the DeKalb County Tigers to a 42 to 10 victory over the Cumberland County Jets on Senior Night.

The win snaps a two-game losing skid for the Tigers and evens their season record to 4-4 and 2-2 in region play. Cumberland County drops to 2-6 overall and 0-5 in the region.

DeKalb County will have a bye next week but will travel to White County on October 20 and to Upperman on October 27 to close out the regular season.

The Tigers are still in the state play-off hunt hoping to finish among the top four teams in the Region.

The first of Briz Trapp’s four touchdown throws came with 4:21 left in the 1st period as he found Marquez Chalfant for 34 yards completing a 76-yard drive for the score. Arian Prater converted the PAT and the Tigers led 7-0.

Cumberland County then mounted a drive that stalled at the DC 9-yard line, but Jaime Perez came on for a 26-yard field goal with 11:48 left in the 2nd period and the Jets trailed 7-3.

The Tigers extended their lead on the ensuing kick-off as Ryon Lyons took the ball and raced 95 yards on the return for a touchdown. Prater booted the extra point and DeKalb County held a 14-3 advantage with 11:32 left in the 2nd period.

Briz Trapp found Marquez Chalfant again with 6:28 left in the 2nd period on a 25-yard touchdown pass capping a 68-yard drive. Prater connected on the extra point and the Tigers opened up a 21-3 lead.

After a Tiger fumble, Cumberland County recovered and later cashed in on a 24-yard touchdown pass from Bryson Wilson to Nolan Carter. Jaime Perez converted the PAT and the Jets cut the Tiger lead to 21-10 with 3:16 in the 2nd period.

Cumberland County later lined up for a long field goal attempt near the end of the half but came up empty.

DeKalb County scored three times more times while keeping the Jets scoreless in the second half.

Briz Trapp launched a 28-yard touchdown pass to Malachi Trapp with 9:53 left in the 3rd period completing a 65-yard drive. Prater added the PAT and the Tigers led 28-10.

DC later mounted an 86-yard drive and scored on a 36-yard touchdown pass from Briz Trapp to Marquez Chalfant, their third hookup of the game. Prater came on for the PAT and the Tigers were up 35-10 with 50 seconds left in the 3rd period.

The final score of the night came on a 6-yard touchdown run by Jordan Parker for the Tigers with 6 minutes left in the game, capping a 53-yard drive. Prater booted the extra point and the Tigers went on to claim a 42 to 10 victory.

A 35-year-old Sparta man was airlifted after a pickup truck crash Friday morning on Highway 70 east.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Danny Prater was traveling east in a 2014 GMC Sierra pickup truck when he failed to negotiate a curve and went off the right side of the road into the woods and struck a tree. The truck overturned and came to rest on its passenger side.

Trapped in the truck, Prater was helped from the vehicle by members of the DeKalb County Volunteer Fire Department’s Rescue Team and DeKalb EMS. He was then transported to the hospital and airlifted to Erlanger in Chattanooga.

The crash was investigated by Trooper Brent Collier with assistance from Trooper Bobby Johnson.

In a special edition program at a special time, 6:05 p.m. WJLE will turn the spotlight on the Region Champs and State Tournament Bound DCHS Lady Tiger Golf Team and DCHS Tiger Football Coach Steve Trapp will make his debut as host of Tiger Talk interviewing DCHS Golf Coach John Pryor and Lady Tiger Golfers Alison Poss, Emily Anderson, and Chloe Boyd.

The Lady Tigers will compete against seven other schools in the State Tournament in Sevierville on Monday and Tuesday.

Following this program, WJLE will air the regular weekly Tiger Talk Football Program featuring host John Pryor interviewing Coach Steve Trapp and Assistant Coaches Luke Green, Eli Cross, Lucas Phillips, and Cole Parsley.

It’s Senior Night for the DCHS Tiger football team tonight (Friday) as the Cumberland County Jets come calling. The Tigers are 3-4 overall and 1-2 in the Region. Cumberland County is 2-5 and 0-4 in Region play.

DeKalb County will try to rebound from another disappointing loss last week to Macon County 32-20.

“I thought our guys played physical and fast but at the end of the night we still didn’t execute the way we needed to in some critical moments and some penalties hurt us. It was another one of those games where we were in it and had a shot, but we didn’t do enough things correctly throughout the game to come out victorious,” said Coach Steve Trapp.

The Tigers are in need of a win to keep their post season hopes alive.

“The way we look at it essentially, we are already in the playoffs. That is the mindset we must have and hopefully our guys will buy into it because if we don’t take care of business here tonight then we may be putting up our equipment the Monday after the last game and that’s not we want to do. We don’t want this senior group to have that on their legacy, but they have to take care of business tonight and if they do it will essentially set up a play-in game between us and White County in two weeks. The winner of that game will probably have a four seed in the playoffs and then we will finish up the year in three weeks against Upperman and give them everything we have. Its exciting but at the same time our guys have to understand that its nitty gritty now and they are not guaranteed post season play unless they take care of business,” said Coach Trapp.

WJLE’s Pre-Game shows begin with “Coach to Coach” at a special time 4:30 p.m. featuring former UT assistant coach Doug Matthews with Tennessee Titans Radio Broadcaster Dave McGinnis and broadcaster Larry Stone talking Tennessee and SEC football.

“Coach to Coach” is followed by “Murphy’s Matchups at a special time 5:30 p.m., a look at Tennessee High School Football from Murphy Fair with commentary on games and coaches’ interviews.

The game will kick off at 7 p.m. and WJLE will have LIVE coverage with the Voice of the Tigers John Pryor and Luke Willoughby on AM 1480/FM 101.7 and on the LIVE stream at www.wjle.com.

Here’s how the Region race is taking shape after seven weeks into the season. The top four teams at the end of the year earn a state play-off berth.
