DeKalb County firefighters and the Tennessee Division of Forestry spent Thanksgiving afternoon working to control a wildland fire on Center Hill Lake. Shortly after 2:00 p.m., crews were dispatched to the area of Indian Creek and Fuson Hollow where they discovered approximately 50 acres of steep forestland burning out of control.

The Tennessee Division of Forestry crew was able to contain the fire using fire lines, while the DeKalb County Fire Department used its fire boat to extinguish fires near the shoreline. The Smithville-DeKalb County Rescue Squad was also on the scene to provide boat transport for the forestry crews.

The fire is believed to have originated near the Indian Creek boat ramp. No structures were damaged or immediately threatened.

DESA Prepared and Delivered 700 Meals on Thanksgiving Morning

November 25, 2022
By: Dwayne Page

Many people got up early Thursday morning to start preparing a Thanksgiving Day meal for family and friends with whom they would be visiting later in the day.

But another group of folks gathered together at the DeKalb County Complex to do some cooking for others in the community who might not otherwise have had a hot delicious meal for Thanksgiving.

Its become an annual effort of the DeKalb Emergency Services Association (DESA) and volunteers to prepare and deliver Thanksgiving meals to the needy and underserved throughout the county.

This year’s meal consisted of turkey, dressing, gravy, mashed potatoes, green beans, roll, and a homemade dessert.

According to DESA spokesperson Blake Cantrell, 700 meals were served Thursday morning at 215 stops throughout DeKalb County.

“We appreciate everybody who donated and came out as well as all the businesses that helped out including Fireman One Bar-B-Que for coming out and smoking the turkeys and the Smithville Bakery and Café for donating a majority of the desserts. We also had several churches to donate, and some people gave money, food and their time. Don’t forget we will be doing this again on Christmas Eve and anyone who received a Thanksgiving meal is automatically on the list for Christmas Eve. If they don’t want to be on the list or if anyone else wants to be on the list for Christmas Eve, we will set the website back up for them to contact us,” said Cantrell.

To get your name on the delivery list for Christmas Eve call 615-390-0297 or 615-712-4286 or visit www.dekalbesa.com
