Thirty-Seven Featured in Friday’s Toddler Show at DeKalb County Fair

Thirty-seven toddlers from ages 13 to 47 months were featured Friday evening during the annual Toddler Show at the DeKalb County Fair.

First place winners received a blue ribbon. Red ribbons went to those receiving second place.

This year’s recipients are as follows:

Boys (13 to 18 months)
Winner: Leo Quincy Pedigo, 17-month-old son of Morgan Pedigo of Smithville
Runner-up: Karson Pettit, 13-month-old son of Zach and Taya Pettit of DeKalb County

Girls (13 to 18 months)
Winner: Norah Jean McKeown, 17-month-old daughter of McKailey Wade and Jimmy McKeown of Smithville
Runner-up: Charlotte Hazel Moore, 14-month-old daughter of Jacob and Megan Moore of Smithville
Other participants: Kingsley Magnolia Haynes, 17-month-old daughter of Chandler and Mackenzie Haynes of Smithville and Clara Delaney Steinbach, 14-month-old daughter of Mickey and Adrianna Steinbach of Smithville

Boys (19 to 24 months)
Winner: Aiden Stringer, 22-month-old son of Amanda and James Stringer of Liberty
Runner-up: Kolsten Baldwin, 23-month-old son of Jessica Ray and Aulbry Baldwin of Alexandria
Other participants: Marshall Hace Kilgore, 20-month-old son of Clay and Mariah Kilgore of Smithville and Chandler Chase Bain, 20-month-old son of Jessica Bain of Smithville.

Girls (19 to 24 months)
Winner: Briley Ann Cripps, 22-month-old daughter of Kami Cripps and Corey Cripps of Smithville
Runner-up: Sophia Grace Torres, 22-month-old daughter of Jose Torres and Brooke Bain of Smithville

Winner: Annabelle Rose Bowen, 34-month-old daughter of Jacob and Kayla Bowen of Dowelltown

Elderly Motorist Killed in Crash

A morning crash today (Friday) involving an SUV and dump truck claimed the life of 79-year-old Gordon Walter of Smithville.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Walter was north on Allens Ferry Road in a Toyota 4Runner SUV when he pulled into the path of a southbound 388 Peterbilt dump truck while trying to make a left turn onto Holmes Creek Road near the Little League ballpark. The dump truck was driven by 40-year-old Terrance Martin of Smithville. He was driving for T Bird Trucking.

The crash report states that Walter’s automobile hit the truck in the southbound lane at an angle. After impact the SUV traveled south for several feet before coming to a final rest roadside left facing north. The dump truck traveled several feet southbound crossing the center line before running off roadside left where it overturned and then came to final rest outside the roadway facing east.

According to the report, Walter was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash. Martin did have on his seatbelt and was not hurt.

In addition to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, members of DeKalb EMS, DeKalb Fire Department, Sheriff’s Department, and TDOT were also on the scene.




First Day of Early Voting Draws 213

The first day of Early Voting for the August 4 Elections drew 213 people Friday including 195 in person and 18 by absentee.

Here’s how the numbers break down:

166 cast ballots in the State Republican Primary and 29 voted in the State Democratic Primary. Eighteen voted only in the DeKalb County General Election without voting in either State Primary.

A total of 61 voted in the Smithville Municipal Election; 4 in the Liberty, 3 in the Alexandria, and 3 in the Dowelltown election.

Early voting times are as follows at the DeKalb County Courthouse in Smithville: Mondays 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.; Tuesdays 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.; Wednesdays 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.; Thursdays 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.; Fridays 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. and Saturdays 9 a.m. until Noon. Early voting will also be held again in the western part of the county on a limited basis. The DeKalb County Fairgrounds will be the site of early voting on July 19th from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and on July 25 from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. Each early voting site is for any properly registered DeKalb County voter.
