Bumbalough Earns Fraternal Insurance Industry Designation

Tim Bumbalough of Sparta, a WoodmenLife Sales Representative, has achieved the professional designation of Fraternal Insurance Counselor Fellow (FICF).

The designation, conferred by the Fraternal Field Managers’ Association (FFMA), is awarded to candidates who successfully complete the coursework and pass the certification exams for four basic and three graduate level insurance-related courses. The Basic course provides an introduction to life underwriting principles; the Ethics course covers ethics for the life insurance professional; the Intermediate course covers total needs planning; and the Advanced course outlines the concepts that must be understood to be effective working in the advanced markets. Graduate-level courses are comprised of modules in advanced areas of life underwriting including estate planning, business insurance and financial products. Recipients must also meet other guidelines and follow the FIC Code of Ethics.

Through his association with WoodmenLife, Bumbalough often provides US flags for schools in DeKalb County and makes donations to other projects in the county.

DeKalb COVID-19 Update

No new cases of COVID-19 were reported by the Tennessee Department of Health in DeKalb County Thursday and the number of active cases stands at 48.

Over the last seven days, DeKalb County had a case count of 27 for a daily case rate of 18.8 per 100,000 residents and the average positive percentage was 10.3%.

The COVID-19 related death count in DeKalb County is 47 since last March and 48 have been hospitalized within the last 11 months.

The total number of confirmed or probable cases of COVID 19 in DeKalb County since March stands at 2,604 and 2,509 are now inactive or have recovered.




No DCHS District Tournament Basketball Games Until Sunday (View Community Calendar Update Here)

*The DeKalb County Health Department will be closed again Friday, February 19 due to weather. The health department will be reaching out to those due for COVID-19 vaccine second doses this weekend or the beginning of next week.

*The DCHS District Tournament Basketball games have been rescheduled for Sunday, February 21 in Smithville at DCHS starting with the girls game at 1:30 p.m. followed by the boys game. Both DCHS teams will be facing Smith County. Because of a commitment to regularly scheduled Sunday religious programming, WJLE will tape record the basketball games for play-back Sunday starting at 4:30 p.m.

DeKalb County Schools district-wide will be on remote learning Friday, February 19 via Google Classroom. No classes will be held on campus at either school for in-person learning Friday due to inclement weather.

*The L.B.J. & C Smithville Head Start Center will be closed Friday, February 19 due to inclement weather.

*God’s Food Pantry will have no pantry or deliveries this week. The pantry will reopen next Wednesday, February 24.

Due to continued hazardous weather and travel conditions in Middle and West Tennessee, including freezing rain, ice and snowfall, Gov. Bill Lee has closed state offices on Friday, February 19 in several counties including DeKalb

*The DeKalb County Commission will meet in regular session on Monday, February 22, 2021 at 6:30 p.m. in the Auditorium of the Mike Foster Multipurpose Center in the County Complex.

*Snow Hill Baptist Church will have a food giveaway Sunday, February 21 at 1:30 at the church. Please line up on the East side of the church and drive around. Someone will put the food in your car. Please stay in your car. No restrooms will be available. Everyone is welcome. Todd Pack is the pastor.

*The Upper Cumberland Human Resource Agency (UCHRA) will hold a commodities distribution for DeKalb County on Thursday, Feb. 25, 2021 from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. at the DeKalb County UCHRA office. Sign up will be available at the distribution site. This project is funded under a Grant Contract with the State of Tennessee.

*A DeKalb County Blood Assurance Drive will be Saturday , February 27 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Ascension Saint Thomas DeKalb Hospital inside the Bloodmobile at the hospital parking lot. All donors will receive a “Loyal Lifesaver” t-shirt and be entered into a drawing for a “2021 Side-by-Side ATV”. Save time by answering your health history questions the day of the blood donation before you arrive. Download “bloodassurancequicksreen” on your phone and answer the questions online. Blood Assurance will also be doing COVID Antibodies Screening. Please remember to eat a good meal and drink additional water and bring a photo ID. Blood Assurance is the SOLE blood provider for our local hospitals.

*Signups for the DeKalb Youth Baseball League will be held Saturday, February 20 from 8 a.m. until 12 noon at the county complex in the UT Extension office. Registration fees are $65 per child and $50 for each sibling. Parents who don’t want to work the concession stand may make a $25 buyout payment. Please bring proof of player age and proof of residency. Tryouts are set for February 27. See the DeKalb Youth Baseball League Facebook for details. Debit and credit cards will be accepted and transaction fees apply. DeKalb County Youth Baseball, formerly known as Little League, is played at the park on Allen’s Ferry Road. Player ages for this league are from 7 to 15 years old.

*DeKalb T-Ball, Coach Pitch, & Girls’ Fastpitch Softball signups will be Saturday, February 20 from 8 a.m. until 12 noon at the UT Extension Office in the County Complex. If you signed up your athlete(s) last year and did not receive a refund you do not have to come out. You will only need to confirm uniform sizes are accurate at a later date with the coach or if address or phone number changes. Fees are as follows: $40 for the first kid, $30 for each sibling, 25 additional concession buyout each kid. Ages as follows: 3 and 4 year old for T-Ball, can’t be 5 before May 1st; 5 and 6 year old boys and girls for Jr Coach Pitch, can’t be 7 before May 1st; 7, 8, & 9 year old for Coach Pitch Softball, can’t be 10 before May 1st; 10, 11, & 12 year old for Girls’ Kid Fastpitch Softball, can’t be 13 before May 1st; 13, 14 ,15, & 16 year old for Girls’ Kid Fastpitch Softball, can’t be 17 before May 1st.

*As part of its community outreach ministry, the Smithville Cumberland Presbyterian Church is again hosting a drive thru mobile food pantry sponsored by the TVA, Saturday morning February 27th 2021. In partnership with Second Harvest Food Bank, the church plans to prepare enough food boxes to serve up to 300 families regardless of their income status, on a first come, first served basis. Second Harvest will bring in pallets of food on trucks. The food will then be off-loaded and organized in preparation for the distribution. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. Name, address, and household size are required. Cars will line up facing north on College Street across from the Smithville Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Recipients will drive through. Please have your own box or basket for the food to be placed in. Limit 2 households per car, unless a member from each family is represented. Others who wish to volunteer may show up Saturday or call Myra for more information at 615-597-4197.
