Could another quarry operation be coming to DeKalb County?

With plans underway for a quarry by Smyrna Ready Mix Concrete Company at the foot of Snow Hill off Highway 70 on North Driver Road, another company is reportedly preparing for a quarry operation of its own between Liberty and Alexandria.
According to the Tennessee Department of Environment & Conservation, Jones Brothers Construction, LLC has applied for a water quality permit for its Jones Alexandria Quarry to be located in DeKalb County at 2159 Old Highway 53 at Liberty on a 110-acre site. The new permit application is for the discharge of treated mine wastewater and industrial storm water into Helton Creek.
“Ultimately this is a water quality permit that has been proposed so this regulates any water that would be discharged from the facility,” said Daniel Lawrence, Program Manager Division of the Mineral & Geologic Resources Mining Section in the Knoxville Environmental Field Office who spoke with WJLE by phone Friday.“The idea being we put limits on that water in order to protect the stream to make sure any water leaving the facility is not going to pollute the stream and cause any problems. That is the main authority the state has over mining facilities. We get a lot of questions and concerns about other aspects of mining and things like blasting, truck trafficking noise, and dust but we don’t have any authority over that and its outside of the scope of this draft permit,” Lawrence explained.
He also described the meaning of the term “wastewater” in the permit application.
“When you hear that word wastewater a lot of people assume sewage, domestic wastewater and that sort of thing. That is technically the correct term but its really rain that has come into contact with processing rock so if there is any rain that falls on a rock crusher the water that runs off of that is considered to be wastewater by the legal technicalities. It doesn’t mean sewage or domestic wastewater discharge in this case,” said Lawrence
The Tennessee Department of Environment & Conservation’s Division of Mineral and Geologic Resources Mining Section has issued a public notice on the proposed permit action to solicit comments and information necessary to evaluate the potential impact of the proposed activities on human health and the environment.
The comment period is from August 26 to September 27, 2024.
Persons wishing to comment on the proposed permit action may submit comments in writing to the Mining Section at the Knoxville Environmental Field Office, Attention: Public Notice Coordinator; by fax to 865-594-6105; or by e-mail to Dennis.Conger@tn.gov. Comments must be received before the close of the comments period September 27, 2024.

Man Charged with Second Degree Murder After Fatal Shooting Thursday Evening

A fatal shooting Thursday night has resulted in a second-degree murder charge against one man.
66-year-old William Anthony McKenzie of Streamer Drive, Smithville is accused of killing 39-year-old Earl Craig Asbury, Jr. at McKenzie’s residence.
Chief Deputy Brian Williams of the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department issued the following prepared statement. “On Thursday, August 29 at 6:54 p.m. Central Dispatch received a call of a possible shooting at 163 Streamer Drive. The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Department arrived on the scene at 7:05 p.m. and made contact with William McKenzie and then with a deceased male laying in the yard. The deceased male is 39-year-old Earl Craig Asberry Jr. of Smithville”.
“McKenzie, the suspect, has been booked into the DeKalb County Jail and is charged with TCA 39-13-210 Second Degree Murder. McKenzie is under a $500,000 bond and will appear in the General Sessions Court in DeKalb County on Thursday September 12th 2024”.
Upon the request of Sheriff Patrick Ray, the 13th Judicial District Attorney’ Generals Office summoned the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation to the scene.
On scene were Sheriff Patrick Ray, Chief Deputy Williams, DeKalb County Sheriff Deputies, DeKalb County Sheriff’s Detectives, the DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office and Assistant District Attorney General Greg Strong.
The investigation is ongoing.
The arrest warrant states that “The investigation revealed that McKenzie, by his own admission, did intentionally and knowingly discharge a firearm striking the victim, Earl Craig Asberry, Jr. multiple times in the Turso area resulting in his death. Prior to the arrival of law enforcement, the investigation revealed that McKenzie made several attempts to conceal the body and made comments of intentions to remove the body from the scene”.
Tigers to Come Calling on Owls Tonight (Friday) at Carthage

After a season opening win against Warren County at home last week 28-14, the DCHS Tigers will be taking their show on the road for the first time tonight (Friday) as they come calling on the Smith County Owls.
Kick-off is at 7 p.m. and WJLE will have LIVE coverage.
In last week’s game, senior captain and quarterback Jordan Parker had a hand in all four touchdown’s throwing for one and scoring three himself.
“I’m so happy for him,” said Tiger Coach Steve Trapp. “He had a big night, but I believe he would be the first to tell you that he could not perform that way without his teammates. I think these guys really enjoy playing with and for JP. He does a really good job back there at quarterback. He did his thing last week. He only had three incompletions and two of those were drops so he was really on. He really prepared well. Its very beneficial for me to have him as my teacher’s aide a couple of times throughout the day so we get to talk a lot of shop and watch a lot of tape together. I’m just really happy how he performed and for all the guys”, said Coach Trapp.
While the Tigers were celebrating a victory, the Smith County Owls were licking their wounds from a 20-6 loss at home to their in-county rival Gordonsville.
“We have had a lot of good games with them over the years,” said Coach Trapp. “The Owls are going to be hungry after losing that first game. I imagine they have probably had a tough week of practice. Coach Dyer and his assistants do a great job there. Those guys play hard. They are very multiple in their scheme with what they do so they are going to be very well prepared, and they are at home so our guys need to understand the challenge we face going up against that, but it still comes down to playing and executing good football,” said Coach Trapp.
