Tigers to Come Calling on Owls Tonight (Friday) at Carthage

After a season opening win against Warren County at home last week 28-14, the DCHS Tigers will be taking their show on the road for the first time tonight (Friday) as they come calling on the Smith County Owls.

Kick-off is at 7 p.m. and WJLE will have LIVE coverage.

In last week’s game, senior captain and quarterback Jordan Parker had a hand in all four touchdown’s throwing for one and scoring three himself.

“I’m so happy for him,” said Tiger Coach Steve Trapp. “He had a big night, but I believe he would be the first to tell you that he could not perform that way without his teammates. I think these guys really enjoy playing with and for JP. He does a really good job back there at quarterback. He did his thing last week. He only had three incompletions and two of those were drops so he was really on. He really prepared well. Its very beneficial for me to have him as my teacher’s aide a couple of times throughout the day so we get to talk a lot of shop and watch a lot of tape together. I’m just really happy how he performed and for all the guys”, said Coach Trapp.

While the Tigers were celebrating a victory, the Smith County Owls were licking their wounds from a 20-6 loss at home to their in-county rival Gordonsville.

“We have had a lot of good games with them over the years,” said Coach Trapp. “The Owls are going to be hungry after losing that first game. I imagine they have probably had a tough week of practice. Coach Dyer and his assistants do a great job there. Those guys play hard. They are very multiple in their scheme with what they do so they are going to be very well prepared, and they are at home so our guys need to understand the challenge we face going up against that, but it still comes down to playing and executing good football,” said Coach Trapp.

WJLE’s Pre-Game shows begin with “Coach to Coach” at 5:00 p.m. featuring former UT assistant coach Doug Matthews with Tennessee Titans Radio Broadcaster Dave McGinnis and broadcaster Larry Stone talking Tennessee and SEC football.

“Coach to Coach” is followed by “Murphy’s Matchups at 6:00 p.m., a look at Tennessee High School Football from Murphy Fair with commentary on games and coaches’ interviews.

“Tiger Talk” airs at 6:30 p.m. with the Voice of the Tigers John Pryor interviewing Coach Steve Trapp and Tiger football players Chris Pulley, Cole McMillan, and Kobe Roller.

An alleged kayak thief has a date with the judge next month.

39-year-old Amanda Alice Atnip of Jennings Lane, Smithville is charged with theft of property and resisting stop, frisk, halt, search, or arrest. Her bond is $8,500 and she will be in court on September 12.

Sheriff Patrick Ray said that on August 25 a sheriff’s department detective received a report of possible stolen kayaks on AB Frazier Road. Upon arrival the officer spoke with Atnip who reported that she had taken the kayaks sometime around the 4th of July. After telling her she would be placed under arrest for theft, Atnip pulled away from the detective, but she was forced to the ground and hand restraints were applied to her.

Four of the five kayaks reported stolen were found. The stolen kayaks were valued at $1,000.

Meanwhile, 36-year-old Kerry Allen Parker, Jr. of Oakley Road, Liberty was arrested recently on a grand jury sealed indictment charged with two counts of possession of methamphetamine with intent to manufacture, sell, or deliver (0.5 grams) and two counts of possession with intent to manufacture, sell, or deliver a schedule III drug. The offense date was January 24, 2024.

The DCHS and DMS Cross Country teams have kicked off their season!

On August 15th, both teams competed at the Cookeville Jamboree scrimmage where 17 high school and 12 middle school teams from middle Tennessee came out to race.

Ben Driver led the Tigers with a personal best, tackling the hilly 5K course in 20:00 flat. This is Driver’s first taste of cross country as a high schooler. He was an accomplished middle school runner, and is now back at it his sophomore year! His teammates followed close behind with freshman Kaine Salas coming in with a 22:38, senior Cale Brown 22:46, junior Ethan Spears 24:24, freshman Vaden Trexler 26:45, and freshman Dan Rodgers 35:46.

The Lady Tigers were led by sophomore Emily Fry with a 26:27 followed by senior Mylie Phillips with 27:47.

The DMS Saints had a solid showing at the Cookeville Jamboree and then traveled to Macon Co the following weekend for the Donna Tucker Memorial Invitational on August 24th.

Eighth grader, Landon Brown, led the Saints in both meets. He gave a solid 2 mile performance at the Jamboree with a time of 13:52, followed by a personal best of 13:21 at Macon, finishing 11th in a field of 252 runners. 8th grade newcomer, Lucas Cable, has shown to be a fierce competitor, finishing second on the team behind Brown with a 14:54, and a 14:52 at Macon. Following close behind Cable included, Aiden Cook 14:59 (Jamboree), Lennon Salas 15:43 (Jamboree), Kaden Mullinax (15:49/15:37), Ty Arnold (16:10/15:51), Josh Ross (17:19/16:48), Carter Moore (16:51), Samson Chittwood (17:47/18:47), Kiptyn Goodwin (18:49/19:05), Brien Rivera (18:46/19:14), Jase Whilmore (17:39/20:35) and Evan Sims (23:30/18:57).

The Lady Saints were led by Leah Chittwood at the Jamboree (21:23/20:49) and Ella Taylor at Macon (20:22). Following close behind were teammates Kielee Hargrave (24:37/20:49) and Sophia Pina (25:45/25:32).
