Ortt Sentenced in Auto Theft Case

A Fayetteville woman charged with stealing an automobile last November was sentenced in DeKalb County Criminal Court Tuesday.

25 year old Brittany Faith Ortt entered a plea by criminal information to theft over $2,500 and received a 3 year sentence on TDOC probation. The sentence is to run consecutive to a 2 year term in a Coffee County case against her. She must make restitution to the victim.

Sheriff Patrick Ray said that on November 2, 2018 Ortt broke into and stole a Nissan Altima valued at $10,000 from Lakeview Circle.

She was arrested on March 20.

Meanwhile 34 year old Jessica Dyal entered a plea to aggravated criminal trespass and received a sentence of 11 months and 29 days on probation.

Sheriff Ray said Dyal, the girlfriend of a co-defendant stood to benefit from the July 19, 2017 theft of a 50 inch Samsung television (valued at $550) from a home on Blackberry Hill Road and a gold single diamond necklace and a cluster ring made into a necklace, valued at $675 taken in another theft.

Children were read stories, learned about June Dairy Month, and got to make paper spaceships during Thursday’s Summer Reading Club Program at Justin Potter Library.

Lisa Cripps, Coordinator of the DeKalb Prevention Coalition, read two picture story books to the kids including one called “We are all Wonders” which helps teach children to be seen for who they truly are.

In conjunction with this year’s summer reading program theme about space and June Dairy Month, 4-H agent Leigh Fuson and DeKalb June Dairy Month Chairman Lily Martin shared a picture story book called “Space Cows” and showed objects representing food items like cheese, rice, fruit among others and asked the kids to identify which of them were actually dairy products.

Elise Driver, Coordinator of the DeKalb County Coordinated School Health Program and Megan Kinslow of the DeKalb County Health Department helped the kids prepare paper cutouts of space ships which they colored and assembled.

This year’s summer reading activities will conclude next Thursday, June 27 with a final party at the DeKalb County Complex auditorium starting at 2 p.m. featuring Scott Humston’s Music, Magic, and Comedy show and children will be given an opportunity to be recorded for a WJLE radio interview to be aired on Saturday morning, June 29th at 9 a.m.

A man arrested for burglarizing a Love- Cantrell Funeral Home van while a chapel memorial service was in progress appeared for sentencing Tuesday in DeKalb County Criminal Court.

41 year old Ernest R. Mashburn Jr. entered a plea by criminal information to auto burglary and theft over $1,000. He received a 2 year sentence in each case to run consecutively for a total of 4 years. He will be on TDOC probation. Mashburn was given jail credit from April 19 to June 18, 2019.

The case against a co-defendant 28 year old Heather L. Standridge remains pending in court.

Police were called to Love-Cantrell Funeral Home April 19 in reference to a theft. Upon arrival the officer noticed that someone had scattered items around inside a van belonging to the funeral home. The owner informed the officer that witnesses spotted a man (Mashburn) suspiciously walking around the backside of the funeral home where the van was parked. Video surveillance from the funeral home showed a man (Mashburn) and a woman (Standridge) entering the van and taking items out of it. Police later located the couple walking in front of Omega Apparel and placed them in custody.

Police recovered items taken from the van including a Ruger 22 handgun, Oakley sunglasses, key fob, radio remote, touch screen radio, FM transmitter, cassette adapter, 2XL US shirts, headphones, phone chargers, cold weather face mask, and 2 packs of baseball cards. The total value of the stolen items was $2,280.
