Three Injured in Alexandria Crash

Three people were injured in a two vehicle crash Wednesday evening on Highway 70 at Alexandria.

According to Trooper Robert Melching of the Tennessee Highway Patrol, 68 year old Loretta Coleman of Alexandria was eastbound on Highway 70 in a 2004 Toyota Camry attempting to make a legal left hand turn when she pulled into the path of a 2000 Jeep Laredo, driven by 24 year old Antonio Larocco of Liberty who was traveling west on Highway 70 without his headlights on. After impact, Coleman’s car spun approximately 270 degrees and came to final rest in the road facing south. Larocco’s Jeep ran off the road to the right and came to final rest against a tree facing west.

Coleman and a passenger of her car, 47 year old Michael Owens of Alexandria were injured. Larocco was not hurt but a passenger of his Jeep, 20 year old Zachary Payne of Brush Creek was injured.

Larocco was charged with expired registration, financial responsibility, open container, headlights off during inclement weather, and driving on a suspended license.




Teacher of the Year Banquet Set for March 5

The twelfth annual Teacher of the Year banquet will be held Tuesday, March 5 starting at 6 p.m. at the Smithville First Baptist Church Life Enrichment Center.

Director of Schools Patrick Cripps made the announcement during Thursday night’s regular monthly Board of Education meeting.

“We just want to congratulate each of our teachers for their hard work and being recognized by their peers. We know there are several deserving of this and we appreciate everything they do,” said Cripps.

This year’s honorees are first grade teacher Vicky Hawker at Smithville Elementary School;  fifth grade teacher Cheryl Vandagriff at Northside Elementary School; Jessica Antoniak, a sixth grade math and science teacher at DeKalb West School; Justin Nokes, a seventh grade history teacher at DeKalb Middle School; and Linda Parris,  a family and consumer sciences/culinary arts teacher at DeKalb County High School.

One of them will receive the District-Wide John Isabell Teacher of the Year award.

In other business, Director Cripps announced in his monthly personnel report that Charlotte Blaylock has been granted a leave of absence and Michael Agee, a mechanic has resigned.

Northside Elementary Principal Karen Knowles gave a brief school report announcing that smart boards have been added to classrooms due federal programs funding and proceeds from cookie dough sales. Students will also be participating in MTSU’s invention convention on February 21. Knowles also congratulated Cheryl Vandagriff for being named the school’s Teacher of the Year at Northside Elementary.

DeKalb West School Principal Sabrina Farler also addressed the school board announcing that the 4TH Annual Family Literacy Night will be Thursday, February 28 from  5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at DeKalb West School. Any pre-k to 8th grade student system wide can participate with their parents. Farler also congratulated Jessica Antoniak as the DWS Teacher of the Year and she mentioned that the first home baseball game will be March 7.




DCHS Tiger Basketball Senior Tanner Poss Honored as Member of 1,000 Point Club

DCHS Tiger basketball player Tanner Poss has joined the 1,000 point club.

The senior was honored between games Thursday night for scoring 1,000 points in his high school career. Poss actually achieved that milestone last season as a junior at Macon County on February 8, 2018 but he was not formally recognized at that time.

Poss was sidelined for part of this season due to an injury. He has been back on the court for the last few weeks.

During a team pre-game meal prior to Thursday night’s games, Poss was presented a cake in honor of his athletic accomplishments.
