Smithville Head Start Center to Host Open House Friday

The L.B.J. & C. Smithville Head Start Center will be hosting an Open House on Friday, October 19 from 1-4 p.m.

Special fun activities will be available for the kids including inflatables and face painting and refreshments will be served.

“We will have vendors here with booths and displays to provide families information including the Genesis House, Healthier Beginnings, Stephens Center, the DeKalb Prevention Coalition, Justin Potter Library and the Imagination Library, the Smithville Volunteer Fire Department, and more. The DeKalb County Health Department will also be making flu shots available,” said Cathy Shehane, Director of the Smithville Head Start Center.

The staff and parents are looking forward to showing their center and the children’s arts and crafts.

“We serve four classrooms of 74 three and four year old children with school readiness skills to prepare them for kindergarten. Our staff consists of 13 people,” said Shehane.

Head Start provides children with activities that help them grow mentally, socially, emotionally, and physically.

“We invite families and the community, including public officials to stop by during our open house to see what we do,” added Shehane.

The center is located at 118 Kimberly Lane.

The first of two Tennessee young sportsman deer hunts for the 2018-19 season will be held the weekend of Oct. 27-28.

Youth ages 6-16 years of age may participate. Participating youth can use gun, muzzleloader, and archery equipment.

Young sportsmen must be accompanied by a non-hunting adult, 21 or older who must remain in position to take immediate control of the hunting device. The adult must also comply with the fluorescent orange regulations as specified for legal hunters. Multiple youth may be accompanied by a single qualifying adult.

Archery season began in the state on Sept. 22 and the first segment ends Oct. 26, the day prior to the opening of the young sportsman hunt. The second segment of archery only season is Monday, Oct. 29 through Friday, Nov. 2. Muzzleloader/archery season starts Nov. 3.

The TWRA makes the recommendation that all hunters obtain a 2018-19 Tennessee Hunting and Trapping Guide. The guide lists license requirements, the counties and bag limits for each of the different deer management units. The guide is available on the TWRA website. www.tnwildlife.org and where hunting and fishing licenses are sold.

In 2017, youth hunters harvested a total of 6,418 deer during the first weekend. It was an increase of 564 from the 2016 total.

DeKalb County Extension will again be offering the Advanced Master Beef Producer (AMBP) class this fall. This class fulfills the Master Certification requirement for 50% cost share in the Tennessee Ag Enhancement Program (TAEP) and your certification will be valid for three years. This program is also an excellent opportunity for those that have an interest in learning more about beef cattle production.

The first class is the Upper Cumberland Beef Heifer Development Summit held in Cookeville, TN on Saturday, October 27th at 9:00 am. The second class will be Monday, November 5th. The third class will be on Thursday, November 15th and the last class will be the DeKalb County Cattlemen’s Association Meeting on Tuesday, November 20th. All classes with the exception of the Heifer Summit will be in the DeKalb Community Complex at 6:00pm.

Topics will include heifer selection, nutrition, retention costs, health, forages, weed management, genetics, reproduction, quality assurance, and farm estate planning. The topics will be covered by various Extension Specialists and Industry Experts from across the state.

The cost of the course will be $75. If you do not have a BQA certification or yours has expired, that will also be offered on the night of Nov. 15 and does require an additional fee.
