He’s a big boy who loves to play big time!

Get acquainted with “Dozer”, the WJLE/DeKalb Animal Shelter featured “Pet of the Week”.

This loveable canine is a Bulldog, American / Terrier, American Pit Bull mix and he is ready now for adoption.

“Dozer is about five years old and has been neutered, vaccinated, and micro-chipped. He is a really good dog. He loves other dogs and is great with people, especially kids. If you already have a dog and would like to meet Dozer, we ask that you bring in your dog for a meet and greet with Dozer. His adoption fee is $180. Dozer is great on a leash and loves toys. He just wants to be loved on,” said Shelter Director Emmaly Bennett.

Please give us a call so we can find Dozer a good home,” said Bennett.

The DCHS baseball season officially opens on Monday, March 13 in Smithville as the Tigers host White County. Game time is 5:30 p.m.

Tad Webb will be starting his 4th year as head coach of the Tigers. In this video interview, he sizes up his lineup of talent, his pitching staff, and the strength of the district schedule.

Meanwhile, the Annual DCHS Tiger Baseball Chili Supper and LIVE Auction will be Friday, March 3 at 5:30 p.m. at the DeKalb County Complex. Tickets are $10 each. You must present your ticket at the door. If anyone wants to buy a ticket call 615-464-0703.

City Poised to Award Bid for Bridge Replacement

The City of Smithville is poised to have a small bridge with a hole in it replaced over Dry Creek Road just off of West Broad Street.

During Monday night’s regular monthly meeting, March 6 the aldermen are expected to award a bid for the replacement of the bridge. Most if not all the funds for the project will come from the city’s share of American Rescue Plan Act money.

The city council meeting will be Monday night, March 6 at 6 p.m. at city hall.

Although it remains partially open to traffic, the bridge has a hole through it that city officials discovered last summer. The Mayor and Aldermen subsequently voted to have an engineer develop plans and specifications for eventual bid letting for a new bridge. A bid opening was held this past Tuesday morning.

When construction begins this spring, the street at the site of construction will have to be closed until the project is completed.

In other business, the aldermen are expected to adopt on second and final reading an ordinance to rezone the Carol Buchanan property from R-1 residential to C-1 commercial located at State Route 56 and Jennings Lane near the Smithville Church of the Nazarene. First reading action was taken last month upon the recommendation of the Smithville Planning Commission.

The aldermen are further expected to adopt on first reading an ordinance concerning septic tank effluent pumps (STEP).

Last month, Daniel Tribble, Manager of Field Services for JR Wauford and Company of Nashville recommended that the city adopt an ordinance or resolution to prohibit future installation of STEPs by private developers based on a new state law which requires municipalities to maintain them. JR Wauford is the city’s engineering consultant.
