The DeKalb County Mayor’s office, along with Smithville-DeKalb County Chamber of Commerce, invite you to explore a free, online job resource tool, DeKalb County Works, where employers can recruit local employees and job seekers can have direct access to local jobs in one online location. Persons searching for employment can engage with businesses in a virtual job fair setting without leaving home.

This new addition to the county’s website www.dekalbtennessee.com, DeKalb County Works, provides a way for local businesses and industries to promote job opportunities that are available. The mission is to contribute to DeKalb County’s economic growth by supporting the needs of employers and those seeking employment through resources offered in a true one-stop environment. There is a Quick Link on the website’s home page and also a drop-down box under the Residents section for “Job Openings in DeKalb County.”

County Mayor Tim Stribling says, “There are local businesses looking for great people to join one of the best community’s workforce. We provide employers with a single point of contact to connect with hundreds of potential employees with available positions locally in our area.”

Chamber Director Suzanne Williams believes this new resource can be a useful tool to any size business from small, locally owned to our larger industries. “We look forward to growing the DeKalb Works page. We hope that any time an employer needs employees, they immediately post the job openings and the qualifications needed thus making it a much simpler process for job searchers,” says Williams.

Smithville Mayor and Aldermen Hold Brief Monthly Meeting (View video here)

The Smithville Mayor and Aldermen held a brief regular monthly meeting Monday night.

The aldermen, upon the recommendation of Police Chief Mark Collins, hired Alex King to fill a vacant officer position in the department.

“About a month ago we had a gentleman quit to pursue his outside business, so I had to replace him. I hired Alex King who was a certified full-time officer for Cannon County. He is from here originally. He lives here in town and will be a welcome fit to the department,” said Chief Collins.

Due to a change in ownership, the aldermen approved a certificate of compliance for Smithville Wine and Spirits on East Broad Street. The business is currently owned by two people but one of them is planning to purchase the interest of the other.

“Anytime there is an ownership change there must be an application for a new license. Currently there are two partners and both of them own 50% and one of the partners is selling his 50% to the other. They will take this to the state (Tennessee Alcoholic Beverage Commission) who actually issues the liquor license but as far as the City of Smithville they have met all the regulations that we require,” said City Administrator Hunter Hendrixson.

In other business, the aldermen tabled action on adopting a resolution to seek a Community Development Block Grant to fund a transitional housing program for women in recovery from substance abuse. The mayor and aldermen will discuss the issue further at a workshop and special meeting Thursday, April 21 at 5:30 p.m. at city hall.

Mayor Josh Miller also announced that an Aviation Day will be held on Saturday, April 23 at the Smithville Municipal Airport from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. and a Street Fair will be Saturday, April 30 from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.
