Representative Terri Lynn Weaver Wraps Up Her District-Wide School Tour at Northside Elementary

State Representative Terri Lynn Weaver visited with 5th graders at Northside Elementary School Wednesday as part of her biennial tour of every school in the 40th District to emphasis engagement in education. The district includes about 27 schools in Smith, Trousdale and parts of DeKalb and Sumner counties.

Representative Weaver brought along her guitar to entertain the students while giving them a lesson on American History.

“The tour is about getting engaged in the classroom,” said Representative Weaver. “ I feel very welcome in the classrooms in the schools in my district and I have been doing this since I have been elected. I go in and tell the kids stories of our heritage and history which is rich with amazing stories of people who were ordinary that did extraordinary things. By bringing my guitar I can sing a song and tell them the history of the song. I tell them about legislation I carried about the Star Spangled Banner Day September 14. I tell them what it is when we say we are a Republic. Its “We the People” and the people give the consent to the representatives to be their voice in Nashville in state government and it’s the same principle with the US government. I enjoy doing this. Its fun, I also hand out constitutions to the larger grades in the government classes and then we have a Q and A at the end where they can ask questions,” said Representative Weaver.

The Smithville Christmas Parade and Christmas on the Square will be celebrated together on Saturday, December 4th.

The Smithville Parade begins at 4 PM with the line-up beginning at 3 PM at the New Life Connection Center, 750 S. Congress Blvd., Smithville. The parade route will leave from New Life Connection Center onto South Congress Blvd. to the Downtown Smithville Square, Smithville.

“This line-up location gives people and vehicles more room to park including parking at the DeKalb County Complex and on both sides of the road to the New Life Center”, said Smithville Fire Chief Charlie Parker.

Immediately after the Smithville Parade, Christmas on the Square will begin around 5 PM. The Smithville-DeKalb County Chamber wants to invite everyone to stay after the parade. So many fun activities happening in downtown Smithville. The Christmas on the Square event includes:

Smithville City Hall – Festive outdoor Christmas displays and holiday music playing on the outside with cookies to eat and decorations to see on the inside. Folks will enter the City Hall building through the south side of the building and exit through the front main entrance.

DeKalb Courthouse – Stop by to visit the elected county officials and enjoy free refreshments and a festive atmosphere. Large Christmas trees will be decorated on both sides of the exterior of the courthouse.

FREE Photo Booth sponsored by the City of Smithville will be located on the main floor of the courthouse.

Christmas Shopping at our Fabulous Downtown Stores – There will be lots of specials and extended hours for shopping making it a great night to pick out wonderful and unique Christmas presents!

“Live” Windows Contest in Downtown Businesses/Offices – Our downtown windows will have “live” scenes in their beautifully, decorated windows from 5:00 to 6:30 PM. YOU CAN VOTE for your favorite “Live” Display Window. Take a picture and post your favorite on the Smithville-DeKalb County Chamber Facebook Page. The live display window with the “Most Likes” will get points added to the judges’ tally sheet. Chamber Director Suzanne Williams and Smithville Mayor Josh Miller will be presenting 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places along with a “Chamber Choice” award for the “Live Window” contest. Mayor Miller is personally donating $250 to the top winning store’s favorite charity. Here’s the “Live Window” line-up and some of the themes, so far:

Grant James has taken the lead on WJLE’s Fearless Forecasters panel picking winners as the college football season enters its 9th week.

James has an overall record of 77-43.

Grant James had the best single week record last week at 12-3 followed by Jared Davis 11-4, Eli Gill, Ricky Atnip, Scott Goodwin, and John Pryor each at 10-5, Scott Brown 9-6, and Chad Kirby 8-7.
Overall, Chad Kirby, who had held the lead for several weeks, is now in second place after eight weeks at 76-44 followed by Jared Davis 75-45, Ricky Atnip 73-47, Scott Brown and Eli Gill each at 71-49, Scott Goodwin 70-50, and John Pryor 68-52.

None of the forecasters hit his underdog pick last week.

Jared Davis maintains his lead for the most underdog points after eight weeks at 35 followed by Ricky Atnip 19, Chad Kirby 17.5, Grant James 9.5, Eli Gill and Scott Brown each with 7, John Pryor 5.5, and Scott Goodwin 3.5 points

Today (Thursday) the Forecasters will be picking winners in the following games:
