County Fire Chief Highlights Achievements of Department During Annual Awards Program

The DeKalb County Fire Department reached new heights in service to the community in the year 2020 and Chief Donny Green highlighted them during the annual awards program Saturday evening held in a virtual setting this year due to COVID-19.

For the 12th consecutive year, the department was recognized as among the elites in Tennessee for outstanding training achievement.

“Of the 732 fire departments in Tennessee, both volunteer and career, the DeKalb County Volunteer Fire Department ranked # 22 for 2019-20 training achievement by the Tennessee Fire Service and Codes Enforcement Academy. Among volunteer departments in the state, the DeKalb County Volunteer Fire Department ranked # 1,” said Chief Green.

Other achievements included the following:

*The department’s recruitment success was excellent in 2020. There were 39 new members added to the roster.

*In March the department sent a team to Putnam County to assist with the tornado search and recovery efforts.

“In August, the department was awarded a $427,360 Assistance to Firefighters Grant for the purchase of new self-contained breathing apparatuses (SCBA). Also, in August, Blake Cantrell was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant to serve on the county-wide leadership team.

*In September, the department was awarded a Community Development Block Grant in the amount of $339,518 to purchase a new fire tanker truck.

*In November, the County Commission approved the purchase of two used fire engines to update the county-wide fleet.

*During Thanksgiving and Christmas, several of the department’s members participated in the DeKalb Emergency Services Association (DESA) meal preparation and delivery efforts for needy and underserved DeKalb County residents.

“For the year, the 81-member department donated a total of 8,866.53 hours responding to calls, attending training, participating in work sessions and fundraising events, and attending administrative meetings and special events. To put that in perspective, that’s 109.46 hours per member,” said Chief Green.

“We are extremely proud of every member of our department for their personal sacrifice; and not only their personal sacrifice, but the sacrifice and support it takes from their families to allow them to serve. It takes a very dedicated individual to step up to the task and demands of being a volunteer firefighter in this department. Because of the support from our award sponsors, we have this opportunity to recognize and reward those who have achieved excellence so that others can clearly see our department’s mission in action,” added Chief Green.

A DeKalb County High School Lady Tiger basketball star was honored at halftime of the boys game against Sequatchie County in Smithville Saturday.

Junior Kadee Ferrell, newest member of the 1,000 point club, was presented a 1,000 point game ball and a plaque by Kathy Pugh. Roy and Kathy Pugh have been gracious supporters of DeKalb County basketball for many years and because of their dedication the 1,000 point game ball has been named on their behalf. Roy passed away in December.

In addition to Kathy Pugh, Kadee was joined during the recognition by her parents, Anthony and Trena Ferrell, fellow players, and Coach Danny Fish.

“It’s an honor to join this club. It has always been one of my goals and it feels good to accomplish one of those. I thank God and my teammates for the opportunity to do this. If it wasn’t for Him (God) I wouldn’t be able to do what I do,” said Ferrell.

“She has been everything a coach would want in a player. She is tough, determined, and self motivated. She is a positive role model for other players and our community. I am very excited to see what her future holds,” said Coach Fish.

Kadee scored her 1,000th career point on January 8th at Cannon County leading the team that night with 27 points and 10 rebounds.

To date, Ferrell has scored 1,054 points for her high school career with 501 rebounds, 189 assists, and 113 steals.

During her freshman year, Kadee was named to the District 8AA’s All Freshman Team, 2nd Team All District, and the All Region 4AA Team.

In her sophomore year, Ferrell made the 1st Team All District, All Region Team, and was named Most Valuable Player in the Daytona Beach Classic.

Meanwhile, one week after defeating them at Dunlap, the DCHS basketball teams celebrated victories at home against Sequatchie County Saturday.

The Lady Tigers won 74 to 49 while the Tigers claimed a 60 to 51 win.

In the girls game, DC led 18 to 11 after the 1st period, 35 to 25 at halftime, and 57 to 37 after the 3rd period before going on to win 74 to 49.

Kadee Ferrell scored 22, Ella VanVranken 16, Megan Cantrell 11, Summer Crook and Cadee Griffith each with 7, Natalie Snipes 6, Xharia Lyons 4, and Madison Martin with 1. In the meeting last week the Lady Tigers won 66 to 39.

The Tigers led 14 to 6 after the 1st period of the boys game , 33 to 14 at halftime, and 49 to 31 after the 3rd period before winning 60 to 51.

Stetson Agee scored 13 followed by Evan Jones with 12, Luke Jenkins 9, Jordan Young 8, Brayden Antoniak 6, Conner Close 6, Aiden Curtis with 4 and Elishah Ramos 2. Last week the Tigers defeated the Indians 60 to 47.

The Tigers improve to 6-7 (2-4) and the Lady Tigers are now 6-8 (1-5)

DeKalb County is scheduled to host Smith County on Tuesday night, January 19 and York Institute on Friday, January 22 starting both nights with the girls game at 6 p.m. followed by the boys game. WJLE plans LIVE coverage.

In their first meeting this basketball season Friday night, the DeKalb County Tigers edged out Macon County 64 to 62 in overtime at Lafayette while the Lady Tigers were outmatched in their game with the highly ranked Tigerettes 71 to 57.

For the girls, Macon County led 14 to 13 after the 1st period, 35 to 21 at halftime, and 49 to 32 after the 3rd period before defeating the DC Lady Tigers 71 to 57.

Kadee Ferrell scored 19, Megan Cantrell 13, Ella Van Vranken 12, Cadee Griffith 9, and Summer Crook and Madison Martin each with 2.

In the boys game DeKalb County trailed 16 to 15 after the 1st period but DC grabbed a 36 to 30 halftime lead and held a 48 to 41 advantage after the 3rd period. Macon County rallied in the 4th to tie the game at 57 by the end of regulation. DeKalb County then outscored Macon County 7 to 5 in the overtime period to win 64 to 62.

Evan Jones scored 28 followed by Stetson Agee with 15, Elishah Ramos 6, Luke Jenkins 5, Conner Close 4, Brayden Antoniak 3, and Jordan Young with 3.

The Tigers improve to 5-7 (2-4) while Macon County drops to 2-9 (0-5). The Lady Tigers slip to 5-8 (1-5) as Macon County goes to 10-1 (4-1).

DeKalb County will host Sequatchie County today (Saturday, January 16) in Smithville starting with the girls game at 3:00 p.m. followed by the boys game. WJLE will have LIVE radio coverage and also plans to carry the games via Facebook LIVE.
