D.C.H.S. Winter Guard Performs at Championships

The DeKalb County High School Winter Guard had its best performance of the season at the Southeastern Color Guard Circuit Championship. Held April 5 at Western Kentucky University’s Diddle Arena, the SCGC brought in teams from not only Tennessee but also Kentucky, Missouri, Mississippi, and Alabama.

“WKU Diddle Arena is a very large and intimidating place, Color Guard Director Shannon Johns said, “but these performers didn’t let that keep them from giving the audience a great show.”

The DCHS Winter Guard improved its score and placed 9th out of 13 teams in its class.

The team headed to Bowling Green Friday afternoon (April 5) and hit the ground running.

“We found a parking lot near the arena where we could practice,” Johns said. “After about an hour of practice, we had to go over to the food court to eat and then check in, before getting in costume and makeup for the show. The team performed at 7:49 and had their best performance of the season. In addition to some parents, a few of our alumni made the drive to support the team as well.”

“This season has not been without challenges, but this team has handled it all in stride and continued to grow and represent DeKalb County very well,” Johns added. “I hope they continue to carry the lessons learned in this and previous seasons with them and keep shining. I have been honored to lead this team and coach these and all of my former students. Not only do they make me proud in their performance, but also in the ways I see their character develop and grow over time. I am and will always be proud of the DeKalb County color guard team!”

Romeo, Romeo!

You don’t have to be named Juliet to have your very own Romeo!

Romeo is the WJLE/DeKalb Animal Shelter featured “Pet of the Week”

“Romeo is four months old and we believe he is an American Staffordshire Great Dane mix. We are not 100% sure of that. He has been neutered, micro-chipped, and he is up to date on all his vaccinations. His adoption fee is $200,” said Dakota Cool of the Shelter.

“Go to our website at https://www.dekalbanimalsheltertn.com/ and look for adoptable pets, select dogs, and you’ll find Romeol. When you click the link for Romeo you’ll find at the bottom of his profile the option to apply for adoption. Fill out that application and then come to meet him here,” added Cool.

The spring Community Day at Smithville First Baptist Church will take on a slightly different look this year. Pastor Chad Ramsey says for the first time the church will be hosting Feed America First a faith-based hunger relief organization based out of Murfreesboro.

“Everybody who comes in will be able to get a box that will be filled with food to fill their pantries, and there will be other items in there as well. No background checks or drivers’ licenses needed. Just simply show up.”

Community Day will be Saturday, April 13, 9:00-12:00, at the church’s Life Enrichment Center, located at 101 West Church Street in Smithville.

Several of the guys in the men’s ministry will also be providing oil changes for the single moms and senior adults at Jamie Turner’s NAPA Auto Parts at 539 West Broad Street. You need to call the church office with information on the make and model of the car so the correct oil filters can be bought in advance. The church phone number is 615-597-4275.
