DeKalb Middle Girls Cross Country Wins at Warrior Invitational

The DeKalb Middle School Cross Country teams competed at the Warrior Invitational meet at Riverdale High School on Saturday September 14th with temperatures reaching 90
The girls team placed 1st over all out of a field of 15 teams and 122 runners. The field was tough as they edged out two of their toughest competitors, Mt. Juliet Middle and CSTHEA Patriots from Chattanooga.
Their top 5 runners all placed in the top 15 covering the 2 mile course.

With the heat of the day setting in the boys team gave a solid performance finishing 8th out of a field of 20 teams and 141 runners. Kaleb Spears finished in the top 20 earning a medal.

With temps around 90 degrees, the JV girls team placed 5th overall out of a field of 8 teams. Cadence Reynolds was the 1st girl runner to cross the line for DeKalb with at time of 18:55. finishing 23rd out of a field of 82 girls. Followed by:

Smithville Fire Department Snuffs Out Blaze at Kingston Factory

The Smithville Volunteer Fire Department was summoned to Kingston Incorporated on Miller Road this afternoon (Monday).
According to Chief Charlie Parker a fire started in a pile of crates and pallets outside behind the building. Smoke from the fire spread inside the factory forcing an evacuation of the employees.
No one was injured and there was apparently no structural damage to the building. Smithville Police and DeKalb EMS were also on the scene.
DCHS Band is Superior

The DeKalb County High School Band is superior. That was the rating judges gave the Fighting Tiger band Saturday (September 14) at the Upper Cumberland Marching Festival at Cumberland County High School in Crossville.
After a rain delay for a storm passing through, the band gave an electrifying performance on the field that earned them top scores in percussion, color guard, drum major and overall band.
“I think the kids did terrific on the field,” Band Director Tracy Luna said. “They played well and marched well. Overall, I think it was a great first run for the kids.”
“I want to give props to the color guard for their performance today,” Luna said. “I’m very proud of the band as a whole. I’m really proud of the percussion section. The players have done very well.”
The 36-member ensemble is performing the field show Shades of Latin this season.
“The first one [song] is a fiery Latin opener called “Border Crossing,” and it was written about 30 something years ago. I played it as a freshman in high school. “Diego’s Goodbye” came from a movie, which I love, called The Mask of Zorro. It’s a very beautiful ballad. I can’t wait for a couple of weeks. We’ve got a tune called “Malaguena” that we’re going to add in that’s going to knock the socks off the crowd, I think.”
The band’s next contest will be at the Yellow Jacket Invitation on September 28 in Trousdale County.
