The DeKalb Prevention Coalition (DPC) and DeKalb Community Advisory Board (CAB) are hosting “A Day at the Park” on April 6th from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at Green Brook Park in Smithville.

The day is designed to be a Child Abuse Prevention and Foster Family Recruitment Event.  It is a free event for families and individuals, designed to educate the community about child abuse prevention and to also provide families with information about becoming Foster Parents.  There will be food, games and activities, speakers, and vendors.

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. During the month of April and throughout the year, the DeKalb Prevention Coalition and DeKalb Community Advisory Board encourages all individuals and organizations to play a role in making DeKalb County a better place for children and families.  By ensuring that parents have the knowledge, skills, and resources they need to care for their children, we can help prevent child abuse and neglect by making meaningful connections with children, youth, and families in our communities.

The CAB’s mission is to identify, utilize and create resources to help families and the community as a whole.  While the DPC works to promote a safe, healthy and productive environment that prevents destructive opportunities among the youth and adults of our community. The DPC and CAB meet together the last Tuesday of each month.

For information on meeting location and times or activities during the month of April and throughout the year, contact Lisa Cripps DPC Coordinator 615-684-6378 or check the DPC Facebook page at www.facebook.com/dekalbpreventioncoalition.-

City to Annex Property off Dry Creek Road for Subdivision Developer

The City of Smithville plans to annex property off Dry Creek Road into the corporate limits.

The aldermen approved an annexation ordinance on first reading during last month’s monthly city council meeting. Second and final reading passage came following a public hearing Monday night. No public opposition was expressed.

The property (parcel 44.00 of DeKalb County Tax Map 64) was recently purchased by Jesus Villa who plans to develop a subdivision. A portion of the 12.18 acre site is in the city but the rest is outside the corporate limits.

According to City Administrator Hunter Hendrixson, Villa came before the Smithville Municipal Planning Commission last summer requesting a favorable recommendation for annexation of the property. The commission granted the request on August 13 subject to approval of the Smithville Aldermen.

A plan of services has been prepared for the property as required by law including police and fire protection, water and sewer services, sanitation, street lighting, and other necessary services.
