Festival of Trees A Huge Success

December 3, 2018
By: Dwayne Page

Opening night for DeKalb County’s first Festival of Trees was a huge success Monday evening as hundreds poured into the county complex to view the unveiling of the 39 uniquely decorated Christmas trees and to show support for DeKalb County Foster Children.

Patrons came bearing gifts which they placed under their favorite tree along Holly Hall, Candy Cane Lane, Cookies Café, and Stocking Theatre and the tree with the most gifts under it will be designated “Tree of the Year”.

Trees are also in the running for “Best Christmas Spirit”, “Most Unique”, “Best Overall Theme”, “Prettiest Tree”, “Most Touching Theme”, and “the tree I want in my living room” as voted on by visitors to the complex.

The trees will remain on display throughout the week and winners will be announced on Saturday.

“I had a goal of 21 trees but we wound up with 39. The community has really rallied around this and I couldn’t be more excited,” said Josh Isaac, Director of the County Complex.

All toys donated will go to the DeKalb Foster Care system.

“What a great way to give back and show kids that Christmas is all about giving,” said Issac.

Monday night’s event also featured FREE pictures with Santa and Mrs. Claus on the North Pole Stage, refreshments in the Cookies Café, and the Christmas Shopping Court where more than 20 vendor booths displayed delightful Christmas gift ideas for sale.

Jail Escapee from One Year Ago Extradited to Face Arraignment

An escapee has been extradited back to DeKalb County from Florida where he was captured after breaking out of the jail over a year ago.

27 year old Daniel Trey Hamilton of Jacobs Pillar Road, Smithville is under indictment for escape. His bond is $25,000 and he will be arraigned in DeKalb County Criminal Court on December 11.

Sheriff Patrick Ray said Hamilton was arrested in Fort Myers, Florida after being involved in a traffic accident there one week after his escape from the DeKalb County Jail on November 21, 2017.

Hamilton, 39 year old Jack Mullican, Jr. of Adcock Cemetery Road and 33 year old Bryon Ray Gibbs of Gin Alley, Alexandria all broke out of the jail annex through a door they jimmied open.

Mullican was captured the next morning, November 22, 2017 after being found in an underground water drain near Mapco Express in Smithville. He became trapped there after making his escape.

Gibbs was apprehended Saturday, November 25, 2017 thanks to an alert Alexandria Police Officer, Josh Arnold and a few citizen bystanders. After being confronted, Gibbs resisted and began fighting with Arnold. Citizens who witnessed the scene came to the aid of the officer to help subdue Gibbs. Deputies and detectives of the Sheriff’s Department also responded to provide assistance.

Gibbs was charged by Alexandria Police with resisting arrest and aggravated assault.

All three, Hamilton, Mullican, and Gibbs, were charged and later indicted for escape.

In July, Mullican entered a plea in criminal court to escape and in a separate case for aggravated burglary. He received a two year sentence for the escape and five years for the burglary to run consecutively for a total of seven years. He must serve two years at 30% for the escape but the remaining five years will be suspended to supervised probation. He was given jail credit of 259 days.

Gibbs also entered a plea in July to escape, aggravated assault (of an Alexandria Police Officer) and aggravated burglary (separate incident). He received a two year sentence for the escape to serve in the Tennessee Department of Correction. Gibbs also got a four year sentence in each of the other two cases on TDOC probation. The terms are to run consecutively. He was given jail credit from November 25, 2017 to July 17, 2018.
