4-H Members Succeed at Land Judging Competition

Often overlooked, soil is the basis of all human life. Without quality soil, we would have no plants or animals.  4-H members Luke Magness, Will Mathis, and Paul Oliver had a lot to learn about soil and the lay of the land while preparing for the Central Region Land Judging contest held in Springfield.  They had great success by earning 2^nd place in the junior high division.  Paul Oliver was awarded 4^th high individual.

The purpose of soil judging is to teach youth the skills necessary for soil science and land use. Competitors jump in the soil “pit” to test texture and determine quality. This offers the students insights into any potential problems or benefits of using a certain piece of land for production agriculture or home site development. Examining the soil also helps with conservation efforts. 4-H members must also learn about slope.

This was the first team from DeKalb County to compete in several years, and they represented us very well! A big thanks goes out to Melissa Oliver, NRCS Soil Conservationist for coaching the team. A DeKalb County man accused of tying up and assaulting his wife and then forcing her to stay in a closet at their home over a ten day period in July has been charged with especially aggravated kidnapping and aggravated assault.

38 year old Erik Thomas Dunn of Indian Mound Road, Sparta (DeKalb County) is under a $120,000 bond and his court date is October 25.

Sheriff Patrick Ray said that on July 10 through July 20 Dunn confined his wife unlawfully as to interfere substantially with her liberty by zip tying her hands and throat and confining her to a closet.

According to the Sheriff, Dunn assaulted his wife with deadly weapons including zip ties, a knife, arrow, and wooden closet rod causing bodily injury. Dunn placed a zip tie around his wife’s throat to choke her which caused the woman to pass out. He used a knife to cut her left arm; an arrow  to injure her foot; and he hit her several times with a wooden closet rod.

Dunn was under bond conditions at the time due to a previous aggravated and domestic assault case against him over this woman.

Mackenzie Leigh Sprague, (Miss. Centerhill Teen USA) 14 years old, of Smithville, TN will compete for the title of MISS TEEN TENNESSEE USA 2019 on October 11-13, 2018 at the Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, TN.  Miss. Sprague is the daughter of Wanda Sprague and grandparents Michael and Dorothy Crowell of Smithville, Stephanie and Buddy Sprague of Woodbury. She attends DeKalb County High School as a 9^th grader and some of her activities and/or hobbies include: softball where she will play for High School Tigerettes, competing in pageants, crafts, and spending time with family and friends.

The MISS TENNESSEE TEEN USA® and MISS TENNESSEE USA® pageants are the Official Preliminaries to the MISS TEEN USA®, MISS USA® and MISS UNIVERSE® pageants and are a WME/IMG joint venture. The young woman chosen as MISS TENNESSEE USA 2019 will go on to represent the state of Tennessee in the 2019 MISS USA® pageant as seen LIVE on National television, one of the most anticipated events of the year.
