DCHS Basketball Season Tips Off Tuesday Night (VIEW VIDEOS HERE)

November 7, 2018
By: Dwayne Page

The DCHS basketball season gets underway next Tuesday night, November 13 as the Tigers and Lady Tigers host Pickett County on Hall of Fame week.

Lady Tiger Coach Danny Fish said his team has performed well during the pre-season and is looking forward to the challenge of taking on the Lady Bobcats, among the state’s top 5 Single-A programs. Tip-off of the girls game Tuesday night is at 6 p.m. After Tuesday night, the Lady Tigers will face Van Buren County on Saturday, November 17 starting at 4 p.m. in Smithville.

First year Tiger Coach John Sanders said he too has liked what he has seen from his team.

“We have had about seven days to practice and each day has gotten better. We’re learning to compete really well. We probably need to work on defense and rebounding a little more to get a little tougher and more physical but I am pleased with the effort so far from the players,” he said.

As for the next week’s Hall of Fame games, Coach Sanders said they will pose a good test for the Tigers.

“Both of those programs (Pickett and Van Buren counties) are historically good. They lost of lot of seniors last year so they will probably be rebuilding but they are still very good,” he said.

National Weather Service officials have confirmed a total of eight tornadoes hit the mid-state late Monday night into early Tuesday morning.

An EF1 tornado touched down in Cannon and DeKalb County Monday night into the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The twister damaged the home of Randy and Cheryl Campbell and other structures in the area of Adamson Branch Road off Highway 53 near Liberty just after 1 a.m. Tuesday morning.

The tornado was the third to be confirmed from the line of storms that pushed through the mid-state causing significant damage and even killing one person in Rutherford County.

NWS officials later confirmed three more tornadoes — two in Lawrence County and one in Wayne County. A seventh and eighth were later confirmed in White and Grundy county.

School Bus Drivers Needed

The DeKalb County School System is in search of experienced bus drivers.

Persons interested may contact Transportation Supervisor Jimmy Sprague. “It takes a special kind of person to drive a school bus. You have to love kids. It’s perfect for a stay at home mom who wants to be on the same schedule as her kids; for a person with their own business or someone who has a part time job or does seasonal work,” he said.

“We have 42 drivers in the county. I am currently one driver short but I am using my sub-pool to fill the position,” he said.

“To be a school bus driver you must be at least 25 years old and have a CDL license, Class A or Class B. You must have a Passenger and School Bus Endorsement, carry a current medical card, have a clean DMV record, and you must be able to pass a background check and drug screening. After a bus driver is hired, there are random drug tests at the bus garage for all drivers. If you are interested in driving a school bus call or come see me. You may fill out an application on line or I have hard copies and we can fill them out at the office,” said Sprague.
